Take a look inside your side compartments... it's tied inside there so you'll be able to replace the whole cord quite easily.
I went to a larger diameter cord when i replaced mine but to be honest i find there's a bit too much tension on the cord now. I'll probably go back to the original size next time even though it won't wear as well.

My roommate (female) went to Walmart and got some plain black bungee, I think around $6..we reused the same hooks. The hooks are held on by a knot tied in the center so you can just cut them. If you open your storage and rod lockers and look under the cap you can easily see how the bungee works. Just cut it out and retie it. Took less than 15 minutes and costs hardly nothing. If you rebuy the hooks, at the marine store here they are 8 bucks a piece, really not worth it.
