Signs and symptoms of ethanol problems and damage include:
Stalling, prematurely worn engine parts, rusting, clogging of fuel filters and carburetor jets, release of gunk and sludge throughout the engine, frequent water-contamination/phase separation of fuel, and eventually engine breakdowns and death.
Ethanol can cause a motor to run lean on fuel, due to water will not burn, which will take the place of fuel.
Vapor lock (fuel starvation) is common when using ethanol fuels.
Alcohol fuels are very prone to phase separation, when the weight of the ethanol and water will sink to the bottom of the fuel tank and get picked up by the motors fuel system. (Even small amounts of water can harm the fuel system).
The initial symptoms, (of using a higher than acceptable concentration of alcohol in fuel, is usually engine stalling when you demand acceleration (WOT).
You'll notice other performance issues, such as increased stalling, misfire, hesitation and difficulty maintaining boat speed during trolling.
The long term dangers of ethanol (and other alcohol-blended fuels) are many, including deterioration of parts (rubber, aluminum, fiberglass etc.), rusting, fuel system clogging, and other varied damage to engine parts and components. Older engines are more prone to ethanol alcohol damage.
OMC/BRP engines have been able to run the ethanol(10%) for a few years. But any engine won't do well with fuel that has sat for a while,especially ethanol fuels. Stabil has come out with a new marine formula that a lot of people have said works for them so far. JMHO
Stay away from ethanol fuels, every one is coming out with products to help with the effects of ethanol, manufactures tell you its ok because if they told you the truth you might be discouraged from buying a boat, thats there job , to sell boats. stabil sells special additives for marine use, my million dollar question is why should boat or car fuel be treated any different? stabil made this product to sell to us guys to make a buck, does it help maybe, does it fix the fact that ethanol will still hurt your motor over time, no. I personaly use non oxygenated fuel, you should be able to find a few stations around you that carry it, I was supprised how many are still out there, the one I get it from only has it in 91 octain so you pay a little more but should have less headaches in the future, I know (Mills Fleet farm) has non oxy if they are in your area.
What do you mean by non oxygenated. Is ethanol in a grades of gas eg. 91 octane
Boat fuels tend to sit in the tank longer than car fuels do, is the reason IMO for marine additives. I know my rig has sat for 3 weeks this time which is very unusual.
My rig is down about 200-250 rpms on the ethanol fuel. Changing nothing else, went from right at 80mph one weekend, to 77 and change the next....
The ethanol dosen't have the btu's that gas does. You're right AB I have noticed I don't get the speed that I used to. But my rig is running fine.
I would go out of my way to get non-ethanol fuel.

Definitely need to reevaluate your priorites!
An interesting side note here, In Australia before the last federal election there was a push for the introduction of ethanol blended fuel, the proponents were the big sugar producers and their politician mates, with a change of government this has died in the a$$...one question you must ask, whats behind ethanol....is it to lower fuel costs or the environment and how do you tell if either is working, who is pushing ethanol in the US.

Where do I find a water separator filter for my Johnson; any idea how much and are they easy to install
in some sates, Missouri included, all road gas sold is 10% ethanol. This does pose a problem with gas that sets the tanks for a long time. A boats gas tank is vented and allows moisture from the air to collect in the tank. the ethanol only speeds this process. I buy all of my gas on the water so I am getting marine fuel that is ethanol free, but at almost $5.00 a gallonit hurts.

If someone would correct me if iam wrong but my water separator has the clear plastic bottom with the drain valve on the bottom I plan to change the filter twice a year but wouldn't the water collect in the bottom part of my of that cup first I have been checking it on a regular basis and iam running the Sybil marine.
