install for comfortroll in skeeter sx190

I'm installing a comfortroll tray in my 05 Skeeter sx190 and noticed a brace between the rod lockers but is not connected to the deck. Will it be a problem for an install? How far from the front of the deck do I need to start the install? I don't want to screw up. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Not sure about this brace, but I usually recommend placing recess tray as far front as possible within a few inches from front console. This is best for me when I side cast over bow TM and go into weeds/pads for retrievals, keeping in mind your seat position, you may want to place another seat mount on deck closer to tray, and get a taller seat pole and butt seat. Also, this way you have more deck space behind tray for when that buddy with size 14 boots has to fish on front deck with you, and you are closer to TM for easy more controlled lifting and dropping of TM.

I do like the looks of it matching the boat color.

no problem. in my opinion it is one of the best improvements a guy can make to a bass boat. it's tough to get started, but once you do it you'll be REALLY glad you did. I procrastinated for a good year before I finally got the nerve!

I got my Comfortroll today and I can't wait to get started. I have no heat in my shop and the temp is in the teens here. I may just have to wait till I can get a source of heat or warmer weather, which ever comes first.

Yah yah, grab a heater and start cutting. LOL It will make you sick to your stomach to make that first cut but you will be so glad yolu did. By far the best addition I have ever done to one of my boats. I would never have a boat without one now.

Those decks tear up jig saws with those few inch long blades . I would only use the jig saw after you drill holes in corners to make cut big enough to fit a Saws All type reciprocating saw with rough wood cut 8" long blade to finish cuts. I trashed my jig saw on first install and had to use Saws All on last cut and it went through like butter compared to the jig saw that I had to replace 3 blades and broke.

There is a brace running across on the SX series and, if you are the first owner, it will void your warranty. Just something to think about.

Re: install for comfortroll in skeeter sx190 (Bug Bunny)

Would it be possible to ad a brace such as a fiberglassed in 2x4 placed in front of and/or behind the recess tray placement. After fishing on a boat with a recess tray it kind of sucks fishing on one without. There may be a good way to reinforce so if you voided warranty at least you could feel confident the boats integrity is not compromised.

I have sold to many Skeeter owners and all of them have been installed successfully, I will be looking around for either drawing or photo of this brace. Most boats the decks are so thick apx. 2" of all fiberglass or wood and fiberglass and do not have or need braces under front deck. This may just be some requirement for certifications, we get some pretty over the top, over kill, recommendations from Certification companys for other parts we make and the recommendations change depending on engineer reviewing prints. We have been doing the same thing for 60 years and know what we are doing, but we have to do what they say even though their judgement call may really be unnecessary.

I have also recently been told some skeeters have a 2x4 brace under deck between storage compartments this is not supporting deck but rather storage compartment walls. Most likely to make wall support.

I'll keep that in mind and yes it would require predrilling for sure. Got lots of time to think about how to do it still well below freezing here.

I have a SX 190 and there are some 2x4 bracing under the deck. Like you mentioned, i doubt that its for the flooring. The "walls" of the rod boxes are plywood so they do need something to be screwed to.

You are right about the brace not being attached to the deck. It is about an inch or so below the deck. I have looked at it close and it came from the factory with what looks like over-spray resin on the brace, not even sprayed on the bottom. The 2x4 was brad nailed in from the rod lockers side because you can see where the nails missed the 2x4. I am going to use a pressure treated 2x4 and use corner braces from Home Depot and screw that baby in place and say "Finished". What I am going to do is better than what the factory did.

One more Comfortroll installation complete. SX 190 owners beware of the brace between the rod lockers but don't let it stop you from upgrading. It took a little more time to re-install the brace but it wasn't a job stopper. Thanks for all the encouragement guys.

Re: install for comfortroll in skeeter sx190 (dr. seuss)

The brace is not for deck support, as previously stated it is not connected to deck, and can be reinstalled to provide support for compartment walls. I have sold to many Skeeter owners and just about every bass boat brand made. None had any issues with deck flexing after install, all installed just fine.

If it's life time warranty you are concerned with, your call, all I can say is the trays really are a nice update and I personally would rather fish on a front deck with one than without and I am sure most would agree. They really do help maintain better balance on rough water allowing you to maintain control easier, and will help strain on back associated with having leg in up position all day.

I have never been told the install would void any hull warranty.

Fished out of my boat with new Comfortroll today and it is more comfortable. The positioning is a perfect fit with my seat. Here is my story: I cut the hole for the Comfortroll and before installing I spread marine epoxy around the inside of the hole to prevent water from penetrating. I took out the rod box brace and reinstalled another one about 2 1/2 inches farther back and maded sure it was stable. After the epoxy cured for 24 hrs. I ran a bead of silicone caulk around the Comfortroll and installed. I added more 7/8" drain tubing directly in to the drain and straped it down so it will not come out. It is well worth the effort and now I don't have issues about the ruining my boat.
