Any ideas on what is making my 2000 Johnson 225 H.O. model HGLSSC s.n.G04759468 die while ildeing .It does this in neutral and in gear and is probably a little worse in gear. It runs good on plane but it also bogs down and dies while trying to push the boat onto the trailer when loading. Thanks CW.
Try trimming the engine level when idleing.

Mine does the same thing even when motor is level.... My mech went out with me and said it was a simple fix, tuning issue, so as soon as I get my props back and we get it fixed Ill let you know what we did. Mine would idle fine all day fresh off the trailer after the first run and fishing it wouldnt idle for nothing get back on pad run fine come off pad idle fine when you restart to run again same thing no idle....
The only way Icould get on the trailer was to choke the motor along with throttle. Ill let ya know though what we did to fix it. Oh yea mine is a 01' 225ho Johhny
Thanks unclemark . let me know what you come up with . I have owned the boat 5 years and these problems just started last summer and has gotten worse this summer. When i first bought the boat the engine was a strong runner with none of the problems i have mentioned . So I am sure some service work needs to be done . CW
When was the last de-carb? What is the idle rpm in gear?

Good question, I forgot to add mine wasnt and idle speed issue mech said it was an adjustment to make but nothing to do with idle rpm though in my case.
I think I would look hard at a decarb, plugs, then just the simple stuff..... is the bulb staying firm or loosing prime? I know mine was a motor of it's own mind a couple of times...... also make sure the clear roller hasn't fell off of the timing advance.....:) no timing advance and throttle forward = falling on it's face....
I changed the plugs, gas filter, and the piston tops look real good ( not saying it doesnt need a decarb just that things look good with a light)i have always run full synthetic penzoil since i bought it. The idle seems a little slow with the tach reading between 5-600 in gear ,no rollers look to be missing and all adjustment screws look factory set with the paint dabs still on them . When this engine dies it does so without hesitation or sputtering just running like a top one second and dead the next and always starts right back up without choking i have noticed the bulb being a little soft on occasion but this is not always the case.
