    Fishing line on prop shaft

I was draining my lower unit the other day and found a piece of roller bearing in the fluid. so I took the prop off and found a bunch of braided line wraped around the shaft. It seems to shift forward and reverse fine and stay in gear.sooooo my question is can I just replace the rear seal and bearing or do I need to rebuild the whole thing?

I wouldn't imagine that the roller bearing from the RBC would come out in the fluid drain more than likely the thrust bearing lost one. You need to pull the RBC and then inspect the Thrust bearing to see if one is gone and replace it and the seals on the carrier.

I would definitely pull the carrier and have a look. Any time you have anything but oil coming from your drain hole, you have a problem. Catch it early and you'll be way ahead of it!

I would also remove the gearcase and waterpump to pull the upper driveshaft bearing housing for inspection. The upper thrust bearing does not sit in the oil and is only lubricated when the motor is running. It frequently rusts or scores or breaks when water gets into the gear oil since it is at the highest point.

Don't lose the shims and remember the exact placement of them on top of the thrust washer.

I have the lower unit off now, I will check that bearing soon.
    Thanks again!
