    Spindle replacement?

Got a '94 Skeeter that I blew out the rear bearing on the rear axel this weekend coming home from the Federation tournament. The spindle is pretty well gouged up.
Has anyone had any experiance with changing one out or is this new axel time?

Is this a single or dual axle trailer, and is only the spindle damaged?

Depending on your mechanical ability, you might be able to salvage the spindle. Using a small fine file, it is possilbe to remove any high spot damaged areas. Care must be taken not to remove too much material, as the inner bearing race needs a snug fit on the spindle.

I have an awesome grease that will prevent this from occuring. If you cover the shipping, I'll send you a cartridge of grease for free.

Thanks I thought of that myself I am pretty handy but some are pretty deep and I would worry about it, spindles don't appear to expensive just not sure how they change out. Have to tear it down some more tonight. Just thought I'd see if anyone here had dealt with it before. Oh and I may take you up on that grease offer.

The spindle is welded to the axle tube, and must be properly located in order to align the trailer tires. A fixture is used at the axle factory which locates both spindles. I wouldn't be too concerned about the gouges.

I'm not sure if you can obtain proper alignment. As the weld cools and shrinks, the location will move. It doesn't take much to throw it off.

    Re: Spindle replacement? (PSM207)

One thing that helps is it is a square tube axle, all the pictures I can find of spindle that would fit it appear to have a pretty hefty square section that would insert to the axle tube. I iron-worked for about 15 years so I can probably jig it up and also control the weld. But the more we talk I'm just gonna take a closer look at taking down the high spots and polish the rest out. I appreciate your input. Thanks it always helps to talk it through with someone.

WOW!!! Stumbled across this thread. It looks like you snuck into my garage and took a picture of my spindle. The damage looks identical to mine. The worst was on the bottom of the spindle. Were you able to fix it? I finally got mine filed down and getting ready to reassemble it all tomorrow. Was just curious if you encountered any problems? I'm nervous as heck about this. Last thing I want is to be broken down hours from home.

Sounds like we're in the same boat (pun intended) I'm still trying to make up my mind how I'm going to approach this may just get an entire new axle with disc brakes. Does anyone know what the capacity rating should be?
