Just wanted to say hi after all the recent lurkin' I've been doing on the bbc boards.

I just got my first boat....here's a repost from a fishing forum I frequent about it:

So I thought I was going on a normal striper trip with my homie Matt Leverich (who kills the delta btw) last friday. I back the boat in and then park the truck. I go to the ramp to get in the boat and matt says, "you wanna drive the boat?" I'm like WTF...why? He say's cause its your new boat. It turns out, that my mom(who is in Alaska) contacted matt after I sent her a link of his boat from craigslist telling her that this is the kind of boat I want for graduation from college and this particular boat is a friend of mines. I sent it to her just to see what she would say, cause I thought I was going to end up with an older bass tracker or something when they come down here for my graduation in December. I put myself through college so my parents wanted to get me something cool for graduation. She ends up sending him a check after he offers her a good deal....and surprises the crap out of me. I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM THE NEW OWNER OF THIS BADA$$ BOAT.



I haven't had time to really mess with all the stuff to try to get my boat to go faster...YET! I've already learned a lot from this site and I plan on learnin' a little more. So, if any one has any advice on maintenance, what to look out for(especially w/ my old motor), or any other tips.I'm all ears.

Thanks guys! I figured I would introduce myself on the best forum here at BBC

My boat is a 1988 SF-175-DX.
It has a custom flippin deck that goes all the way to the consoles. Transom has been rebuilt, along with carbs and the lower unit.

I've grown up around boats in Alaska, just not to familiar with outboards and bassboats, so I have plenty to learn.

As soon as I graduate from college (in 2 weeks) and finish my finals papers/presentations I will have more time to tweak my setup for optimum speed. I'm lookin' forward to it.

I plan on creating a sort of spreadsheet for myself for all the maintenance that needs to be done on trip, monthly, and yearly basis. Just so I don't forget anything. If anyone has something like this already, I would be stoked if you could let me check it out.

The boat will be easy. The only thing you need to worry about is keeping the motor clean. Always use some kind of carbon build up preventer (ringfree, SeaFoam, or mercury equivalent), the directions are on the bottles. I would do a shock treatment to start but it will smoke like hell. Run the best oil recommended for your motor, and have the motor serviced before you run it. A good service shop will tell if it is running right or you could end up causing more damage. Have them check compression, lower unit oil, water pump, and impeller. Spin your prop to make sure it is balanced and the shaft is not bent. Make sure you have grease in the trailer bearings, and the lights work on the trailer when it is hooked up. Charge the batteries, put the rods in the locker, and go fish.

I have a 6" jackplate on my boat, that helped get me a couple of mph. Mine would always run about 63gps with pretty full gas and a couple of 200lb+ guys. That was with the original 24 Turbo.The 25p tempest I am running now is a little slow on the holeshot but doesn't do bad on the top end. Also the cooler weather helps a little also.
I am glad to hear that the transom on your boat has been rebuilt as that seems to be a major concern on the Starfire Skeeters.

Larry, I have a 6 inch turbo jackplate. (I think thats the size and brand). Next thing I'm gonna get is a prop. I think I still have the original prop on there and it is nicked up a little bit. That is good to hear about the transom.

Blanked, Thanks for the suggestions. How often do you use additives? I've heard a few different things, from every other tank to three times a year.

For another question...haha. Does anyone know the max rpms for my motor, or where I could find that information.

Every tank. Just follow the directions. On the rpms, I went to a dealer and they had service manuals for just about every motor, or you can buy online. You may be able to find it on some website also.

The recommended rpm should be about 5500-5800rpm. Most motor guys will tell you that turning it to 6000 is very much the norm for that motor. I have turned mine to about 6200 with an old 24p-3blade Turbo prob.

That was MY boat! I had an Evinrude though, and sold it a few years back. I've had 2 newer models but that particular 1988 SF175 was one awesome fishing machine. My wife tells me it was paid for and to this day never should have gotten rid of it!
