    200HP Ficht/EMM Questions----HELP--Anybody seen this before???

    2000 200 HP Evinrude Ficht
    Model: E200FPXSSC
    Serial Number: G04820717

I am a noob here and am hoping that someone here has seen these issues before and can give some guidance. I apologise for not having the model number, I will post it tomorrow after I talk to my mechanic AGAIN.

Has antone ever seen these motors just shutdown with NO advance warning or lights/warning horn coming on??? This has been a recurring problem with this engine. We are running and all of the sudden, it just shuts down with no warning. You then turn the key off and back on , it self tests, and the 3 of the 4 light stay on after the test. Low oil, check engine, and water temp remain on until the motor cools and then it starts back up, runs until warm again the repeats. Twice I have been at the Evinrude dealer already and they first trouble shot this to a new impeller. Well we replaced that, still the same issue, back to the shop. Then they replaced the complete waterpump housing( dont know why they didnt do that the first time) stating that the housing must have been slightly warped when the first did the impeller and they didnt notice it. They also blew out with both air and water the cooling ports on the block an blew out the water lines to and from the EMM. They said that they did get some debris to come out of the right side of the engine, changed thermostats, and told me thatshould take care of the problem . The computer codes were EMM hot and that is why they did what they did. Well back on the water for the fourth, boat ran about 2 miles from my dock and did the same exact thing as before. I suspect the EMM , but the mechanic says that if it is the EMM, it should not self test ok at startup....I was towed back to within 1/2 mile of my dock and I was able to get the boat running and sped back to the dock before it shutdown again. I made it to the dock still running , so i let it idle and pulled the top water line from the EMM to see if water was being pumped through it, Water was coming out and it seemed to be an OK temp, (not to hot), but the right side of the EMM was VERY hot to the touch. Is there a bypass in the EMM cooling cycle??? The block was not that hot( appeared normal). I shut the engine down to go home and get the trailer, upon return, approx 10 mins, the motor would not start and the three lights were on again after the test. I turned the key on and off abot 4 times(all allowing the test to complete) and on the fourth time the lights cleared and I got it started. Back on the trailer and straight to the sp again..

Is the instrument that shows the warning lights just for display or does it have some control over starting/not starting???? Just trying to figure out if I have a bad cluster and those lights on are causing the EMM to not allow the start. Or is it only the EMM that can be the the "spoiler" and only it turns the lights on. I just want to be sure before I pull the EMM and send it off to DFI if there might be other easier possible fixes,

I have had this engine since new, and only recently have the problems started .. This has been soooo frustrating. I really appreciate all help that can be givin as I am starting to get frustrated with the shop. Problem is they are the only game in town in Tyler Texas, The owner is a family friend, and he is the Fact trained Tech in the area. I just want to be back on the water and have some confidence in the motor.

Sorry to be so long winded, just wanted to give as much detail for troubleshooting as i could. One more thing, With all of those lights on , the motoe wont even as much as try to turn over, but after cooling and the self test passes with no lights, fires right off.

    Please help me,
    Thanks,
    Wally/flynhi757

I'm sure that you mean the NO OIL light stays on and the LOW OIL light is off when the motor quits.

It sounds like the ECU is breaking down internally. that happens often if the ECU has gotten overheated in the past and stressed the electronic components inside.

Evinrude has an exchange program for ECU's or you can contact dfitechnologies.com for repair.

Yes I ment No oil. Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have a rec on which way to go as far as EMM change. I havent read any negatives about DFITech., and I believe that they are cheaper than the exchange from the factory. I just want to be back on the water. and Yes I did overheat the motor about 4 years ago and my mechanic in Cape Canaveral did tell me that the EMM would eventually have to be looked at. I guess the time has come.

I have not heard any thing bad about DFI only good. I just had them repair my ECU and they had great customer service. From their door to mine repaired in just over 24 hours. If you ask me that is great turn around. I will install on Tuesday and let you know how my motor runs.

Do they repair your EMM that you send them or do they take yours and send you another that had been repaired. I am curious since they call it a core, but then it seems that they repair yours. I am asking since the fuel injectors are set on that specific EMM and if you get a replacement, it has to have the info transfered. Just wondering.... I am out of town all week so yes I would like to know how it runs agter you reinstall.
    Thanks,

The injectors should be fine from what I recall as they don't have to be re-installed with the coefficients as the ECU doesn't care and the 99 injectors don't have a disk the 2000 and above EMM's and injectors do. SeaHorse will verify or chastise me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the info. Good to know about the 1999 vs 2000 difference. THe sad part of this ( for today ayway) is I am out of town and had the wife read those numbers from theTexas title, I thought I had a 2000 series motor, but the title says 1999. How sad is that, either I am just plain crazy or Texas messed up on the title. guess I will find out when I call the shop in the AM and let them know why the boat is back again. Thanks for everyones input, I will update/edit my origional post after i get the info in the AM.

It will wait and we will still be here. Read your model number off the motor tag on the swivel bracket.

Re: 200HP Ficht/EMM Questions----HELP--Anybody seen this before??? (ChampioNman)

I have updated the model and year of the motor in the origional post. My wife was reading the date of manufacture(12/99) not model year(2000). Sooo since it is a 2000 model, whatabout the injectors and being synced to a new EMM. DFI is not open until Tuesday so I will have to wait and call them tomorrow. Any input/ideas now that I have the correct info about the engine. Thanks,
    Wally

DFI will only repair your EMM and return it to you so the Injector information should still be there. They have great customer service and their turn around is second to none.

You're lucky you got all those years of trouble free servicce; I have the same year and model number and i have had at least one major problem every season since new. I think it has finally given up the ghost and I'm going to have to repower. As much as I hate the thought of that expense; I will be soooo glad to see that motor gone. Good luck- I feel your pain. Well DFI has diagnosed and fixed the EMM and it was reinstalled on the boat last Friday. I was able to get a twenty minute run on her and she ran like a champ with only one CEL coming on for a minute( I am assuming this was a water in gas warningsince it happened at throttle back to idle and went out on throttle up). I have been trying to run out the gas from over winter, guess I will add some of that HEAT stuff to the fuel to take care of the water. I am back on the road this week so I will give her a good running next weekend. Thanks to all on this board who helped me with their input on my problem. HAve a great week and I will report back . Bye the way DFI was great to work with, very quick turn time on the EMM.
