Does anyone know what size socket I need to remove my prop?

I have a 1/2" rachet but I need to go get a socket to take my prop off. Don't have one that big. I don't need a whole socket set, 'cause I mostly use 3/8 so it would be nice to know exactly what size I need so I can run into Sears or Lowe's and pick one up. I assume I just use a block of wood to wedge on the prop to keep it from spinning to take it off? Is it reverse threads? Thanks in advance. My first time taking it off.

I think mine is 1 1/16", they are right hand threads.
Save a trip back and just remove the nut and take with you.

Thanks, I'll pick one up tomorrow. What do you mean remove the nut to save a trip? I can't remove it b/c I need a socket. Does everyone agree that it is 1 1/16"?

You can use an adjustable wrench to remove it.

Ahh, okay. I thought about a big crescent wrench, but wanted to make sure I didn't strip it or anything. I'll give it a try. Thanks

It is an 1-1/16" socket. I prefer to use a 6 point, deep well socket. Be sure that the cotter key (stainless steel) is in excellent condition. A piece of wood between the cavitation plate and tip of the prop blade will keep it from rotating when you torque on it. It is a standard (right hand) thread.

And I was told to always make sure motor is out of gear and the kill switch pulled just in case. Seems like overkill but urban legend has it that someone once lost a hand because they kicked the motor over trying to torque it too much and it jumped around and took a hand off.

Do I need to put a torque wrench on it or just get it good and snug and put the cotter pin back?

Torque wrench is best but you can get by without it. Just snug it down good and line up the slots in the castle nut and put the pin back in.
