Did you guys have to pay for your 10 hour tune up? My nephew bought a 200 HPDI and was told by the dealer to bring it in, when he went to pick it up they charge him $190.00 for changing plugs and and changing grease in the lower unit. Is this normal?
my dealer recommends the first service to be at 20 hours, but it is not uncommon to have a bill afterwards. I am curious why they changed the spark plugs after such short hours though. Usually its only gear lube and cleaning the plugs, torqing the head bolts and greasing all grease points. They also have to adjust your oil linage rod to get the motor out of its over oiling break in setting. At my dealership that service would have run you about $90. And I know one thing, the spark plugs don't cost $100
Probably depends on how nice your dealer is. But for the most part, I think just about everyone pays. I paid around $80-100 for mine. They didn't change the plugs, said it wasn't necessary, but changed the lower unit oil, compression test, adjusted carbs. I believe that was it. I find it a rip off for that much if that's all they done. You will find that alot of the maintanance things can be done yourself.

Just bring the boat to me. I'll do it for $100. I need to make some extra cash. Seriously, you can do all this yourself in less than an hour. The only thing you might need them to do is retorque the headbolts but most don't even worry about that.

Yeah, I think I could give you 5 dollars for every time the dealer actually does that and you give me 1 dollar every time he doesn't and I bet I'd make money.Heck, you never know, they may not even be changing the oil. All comes down to trust I reckon.

$100-$150 would be about right for the 20 hour tuneup. The plugs should never just be cleaned and re-installed in my opinion. There is a reason it is called a "fouled plug". They should also be doing the fuel filter, lower unit grease, fogging the engine, and checking the linkages.
doesnt the HPDI also have those high dollar fuel filters that need to be changed at the 10 hour service?
Skeeter Jay, They need to be changed ever 100 hours. if you have a external fuel/water seperator the intervval is longer
ok, I dont have the HPDI, mines the carbed VMax but I thought at one time I had been told that if mine would of been a HPDI that my 10 hour service would of been about double what I paid because they would of changed the fuel filters.
Both fuel filters on HPDI need to be changed at 100 hours but if you have a Racor or Yammie external filter and change it once a year I don't think the other two will ever get dirty. The Racors catch debris much smaller than the other two will and they are huge compared to the engine mounted filters.

How can I tell if this was ever done on my 175 HPDI? I bought it used (with 53 hrs. on it), have paperwork for a dealer-performed 20 hr. maintenance (and a copy of the computer printout done right before I bought it), but it's not detailed as to what was actually done. Is there a way to check this?
That's news to me as well. I know they "check" the oil linkage adjustment to ensure it is properly oiling, but I've never heard of Yamaha using it to double oil during break-in (on HPDI's least ways). Perhaps this is a carb engine requirement. Anyone know for sure?
When I had my motor blow up and got the powerhead replacement I talked to the mechanic about this,who seems very knowledgeable. He said that on a new HPDI he opens the oil linkage up all the way and runs it for something like an hour and then adjusts it back where it is supposed to be before the new owner takes it home. Then it is up to the buyer to finish the break-in per the manual. So if the dealer is doing their job before you take possession of the boat there should be no need to bring it back for any adjustment of the oil linkage. I'm not saying this is the gospel just quoting what he told me and he really seems to know his stuff. He is one of those guys who don't say much but when he does he is very confident and what he says makes sense.

CA Ken, if it makes you feel any better I know that yours was done. I know who's boat you bought and we do it on all of our HPDIs. Hope all is well with you and tell your son congratulations on his new boat.
Bass Junkie, you are correct if the dealer does the proper procedure when he P.D.I.s the engine there isn't any need to have it adjusted.
I am no mechanic but I think the proper procedure is to completely disconnect the oil rod and run it in gear for ten minutes. I can check with one of our mechanics to see if that is correct.
