    Battery question

I'm wondering if the cranking battery that I have for my Z158 is enough for what I'm running.
I have 2 HDS5's, Sonic Hub, and the LWX-1 sirius antenna. Plus live wells, etc.
Will running these during a tournament drain the my battery to where it won't start my 200 ProXS? Is my battery big enough?

You have 800 cold cranking amps which is probably border line for your 200 Mercury. I'm not a fan of Interstate cranking batteries cause Ive had issues with them. Ive had good luck with Interstates for the trolling motor motor but not cranking. I would upgrade my cranking battery if I was you. Get a cranking battery that has at least a 1000 cold cranking amps.

That's the battery that came with the boat.
What cranking amp or battery type does this motor call for?

    Re: Battery question (lwabirds)

That battery is more than enough for that motor, but with all the electronics added I would up to a 1000 cca battery. Ive drained a 1000cca battery even, with bilge pumps going all day, radio, gps, locators... I carry jumper cables with me, Ive had to jump my cranking battery off my 29 deep cycles a few times. Dont want to get stranded in the middle of Sturgeon Bay and 4+ footers.

Get you a Decka group 31 series and u will not have to worry one bit about battery problems, i update most all our ordered boats with those, u need the extra punch with these big screen tv and jam boxes

    See this http://www.trojanbattery.com/p...5.pdf
With your motor you should be looking at 1000 cca min.

    Rodney or roger,
Will my ranger dual pro charger charge a die hard 31 platinum glass matte battery? My neighbor thought that I may need a special charger for a glass matte battery.

I ran the Odyssey group 31 and had no issues with onboard charger, this is the same as Sears PM1 only more $$ (found that out too late). They charge very fast compared to flooded battery.

Right from the Dual Pro web site:

    http://www.dualpro.com/products/professional/
    ---
    Product Features

Approved for Wet Cell and AGM batteries
    ---

Gel type battery is another story, Dual Pro has a variant for those, neighbor probably has AGM confused with Gel type.

    Re: Battery question (lwabirds)

The Merc Manual specifies 1000 MCA, 800 CCA or 180 Ah as the requirements for the motor so you have that. With your add ons you should probably bump it up a bit.

    Re: Battery question (Jake Grey)

I'd run your depth finders to the deep cycles and other accessories that have a constant draw.

I have a 180 VS Reata and have just installed dual Perko battery switches for my Merc 150 Opti on one and all accessories on the other. By doing this I am able to select which battery i want to use for Merc start up and in the unfortunate case of a dead battery, I can switch over to my 29 series deep cycle to turn her over and then back to my cranking battery to run and be charged by alternator. Same senario for the accessories, I can switch from cranking to deep cycle or completely OFF with the rotation of a switch. Great security when out on the water. I'm surprised Ranger doesn't provide this with new boats. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Merc does state that the cranking battery should ONLY be used for the motor and not accessories, although this is common practice.

Yank all those interstates out of your boat and get Deka's...

Interstates came with my 09 Z520 and within less than two years, three of the four were toast.

    I got 4 Deka 31 AGM's and love em'.

    Re: Battery question (lwabirds)

One thing you might consider doing, when you stop to fish; quickly push "power" button then "enter" on your console HDS unit. This will put unit in 'Stand by' mode. When you get ready to leave that spot push "power" button again then "exit" and HDS unit is ready to go; no waiting for GPS to link or maps to load and your battery will last longer.

You still need to upgrade though, sorry.

I've got Dekas in everything except my truck and that's next. No problems.
