40 hp evinrude lower unit

Does anyone know the correct way to change the oil and what type of oil in the lower unit on a 92 evinrude 40hp? Thanks, Dave

Welcome to the BBC.

To change the lower unit fluid, you remove the lower plug on the gearcase, this is a slotted screw towards the front and below the center line of the propshaft, then look at the top front of the gearcase, there is another slotted screw but it looks smaller than the lower screw......What ever you do, Do Not Turn or remove any Phillips head screws.

See your local Bombardier dealer and purchase a bottle of Ultra HPF gear lube and a hand pump, add the fluid from the lower plug until it comes out the top plug, reinstall the upper slotted screw, remove the hand pump and install the lower plug.

A small amount of oil will be lost, but as long as it is a small amount you should be fine.
