    225 HO ETEC Water Pressure?

I had the HOT alarm go off on my boat (2007 Ranger with 2007 225HO Etec).

I was wondering a few things about the water pressure:

    1. What should it show at idle?
    2. What is typical for pressure when running along at ~40MPH?

Mine barely registers at idle, and is about 10PSI at 40MPH.

    ETEC Model: E225DHLSU, S/N: 05186373

The HOT alarm comes on at above 5000 RPM after I cruise for a while, when it did, the TEMP gauge did not seem too high, ~160 maybe, was hard to tell with all the racket from the alarm.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (LIQUID NIRVANA)

What is your WOT (Wide Open Throttle) RPM. It should be NO LESS than the optimum RPM which is 5600RPM

Your engine temperature at idle should be 160 deg F. (No less)
At full throttle around 143 deg F

    Its right about that, 5600 - 5700.

Nice chart, I will check my pressures really close this week against that chart. Pretty sure its running low.

Yep, just had my water pump, and empeler changed out. Cost me $0.00, and now I can cruze at 30-40 with out it alarming, and going to idle speed on me.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (LSUZ)

My 2007 225 HO runs very low at idle. Anything above 1000 rpm puts it at 10 plus. 4000 rpm and up it reads 13 to 14. never noticed at wot. My unit does pee water very well at all speeds. When I idle around at less than 1000 for a long period of time in 80 deg plus water my unit goes to 175 deg. Just a quick/short run a 2000 or above will briong it down to 165 or less. Continues to fall at faster speeds. Runs around 150 at high speed.
My water pressure is a std water pressure gauge. How accurate are is these water guages. With what I see about my speedo on the boat verses the GPS , you may get a 20 to 30 % variation. Thats 2 to 4 PSI on a water guage.
My motor only has 63 hours on it. Do I need to check on my waterpressure?

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (LSUZ)

I think I am in the same situation as you LSUZ.

Did they do the water pump and impeller under warranty?

I ran my boat tonight, about 5000RPM for a couple minutes and I get an alarm, although the temp gauge doesn't indicate above 140F when it alarmed.

Under 5000 all day long (went 5 miles at that RPM, no issues).

Water pressure at 5000 RPM is ~10PSI, same as it is from 2000 RPM on up.

At idle the needle barely moves, maybe 2PSI, indicator is peeing water like it had a half case of Bud in him.

Can anyone confirm if this is true in regards to the map upgrade for the over heat issue?

There was a map upgrade for overheat, but it LOWERED the temp that the horn came on. Made it so the warning horn came on at ~185, and it went into SLOW mode at ~195...

Lucky, we will need to know what map you are running along with model and serial number.

The water pressure on the E-TEC should be 3-5 at idle and a minimum of 15 at WOT, with that said, when the cylinder head temps reach 185 degrees, above 2000 RPM, the HOT light and HORN will come on to warn the operator of a potential over heat, at 193 S.A.F.E will come on and slow the motor.

That sounds exactly like my problem I was having. Oh and yes they repaired all for $0.00.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (rzone)

I had an occasion to take a ride on the maiden voyage with a guy in my club who purchased a GEORGEOUS 07z20/225HO E-tech. Water pressure went off with him and we slowed down and it went off. It was indicating low pressure on guage. Took off again and it ran maybe a mile and horn went off again, we slowed down again and it went off again. All the while it was showing good telltale water coming out. He wanted me to drive and I did and after a couple of miles alarm went off. I suggested he take it to the dealer and have the certified E-Tec tech. look it over and they serviced the water pump, etc. (etc. because he doesn't know what all they did to it) since we've had a TX and he had no problems with it since.......G
    My 08 250HO has 6psi at idle and 18-21#at 5900 1" below the pad.........

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (Lucky1)

Lucky, see your dealer, he can see what map you are running with the diagnostic software.

If you have a overheat alarm on a E-TEC with light and horn only (No S.A.F.E) the engine is warning you the cylinder head temps are at 185 +- 3 degrees, if you continue to run and the temps get to 193 +- 3 the engine will go into S.A.F.E.

If the overheat light or temp guage in your truck indicates a hot engine do you keep running it to see if it will go off or cool down?

Do not continue to run an outboard motor when lights and horns are coming on, slow down, get it to the trailer and straight to your dealer.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (ELGIN)

Elgin - Thanks for the reply....

I've taken it in once alredy for the overheat issue and the dealer said there was nothing wrong with the motor? They also said the water pump was fine but decided to change to plugs for some reason and the trip ended up costing me almost $200 when I thought I was just taking it in for a warranty issue!!! The motor will run all day long at 5200 RPM's - if you go over that for any amount of time and the alarm goes off? PSI is right around 15 or just below when I'm running those RPM's. I've even adjusted the motor height so see if that would help but to no avail.

I just bought the boat this spring from C&O Marine and I has them hook it up to the computer to see if there were any faults and it showed the overheat going off. They turned the boat on and let it run for 15 minutes or so and said the motor was fine after nothing triggered. I'm sick to my stomach at how much it would cost if I drove the boat down there to get looked over (over 700 miles round trip)... anyone know and trust a local dealer in central Indiana that knows what there doing and also won't keep my boat for two weeks or longer?!!! You run into the nice issue of not buying the boat from them so your last on the list for service.

    Lucky1,

This is exactly what my 2007 ETEC does. I took mine to the dealer today, we will see what he says in the next few days. I would hope this is a warranty item.

I will keep you posted, if a water pump fixes it, you could likely do that yourself and save money over a long trip to a dealer.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (rzone)

The local ETEC guy knows his stuff. he pulled my lower unit and looked at water pump, no visible damage, but he replaced it since it was apart (as per my request).

He also ran diagnostics, update the MAP? (code in the ECM), and told me to run it.

Ran it tonight (couldn't hold it wide open due to water skier boat induced waves), but was able to go a long ways over 5200 RPM and no warnings.

More water pressure at idle (5PSI) and at cruise its 14 - 15 now.

He also determined my ECM was set to run the wrong oil, I am running the expensive stuff (HD-100?), the dealer I picked the boat up from said to run only that oil, funny the ECM was setup for XX-60? oil).

Dealer said this change would reduce oil consumption.

It was warm tonight, maybe 82 (that freaking HOT for Seattle), and the boat ran great, so I am happy with the service.

Need to get a smooth lake and run the boat at full throttle for a few miles to make sure this warning is gone for good.

Amazing info in that ECM, wish I knew about it before I bought the boat, would have asked for it in advance.

Re: 225 HO ETEC Water Pressure? (rzone)

This does indeed look to be fixed now, I ran the boat hard today and no alarms.

Caught fish, had a blast running home under the 4th of July fireworks.
