Ranger 198 VX Manual Jackplate Height

    I've just put a manual 6" jackplate on my 2008 198 VX.

Haven't been out to dial it in yet but want to know where you guys that had a manual plate on a 198 had it set so I didn't have to play around with it too much.

Running a Yamaha 200 Series two motor. We initially set it 3.5 inches below the pad for out first try.

Re: Ranger 198 VX Manual Jackplate Height (rtinplnc)

I believe my '04 519 has the same hull. Not sure if different motors run at different heights or not, but I've got a 200 EFI Merc and just added a 6" Slidemaster last year. My first attempt was at 3-1/4" below pad and it was too high. I would see my water pressure drop fairly early in my trim range. I lowered it to 3-1/2 and it was running great.

yes the 519 is the same hull.. start at 3.25 below pad Sir. let me know if you have any questions.. I have a very fast 519 due to lots of tweaking and have my plate set at 3.25 currently.

Ronnie, if your running the 25T1 you can jack it up. The yammie will run higher than a merc. If you want a few more mph and better holeshot put a Fury on it and leave it at 3.5.

Re: Ranger 198 VX Manual Jackplate Height (comanche1)

    Thanks, Brent.

I was going to go over to Buckhorn this afternoon but ran out of time. Maybe I'll get it in the water for a run before long. It's got to be better than it was. Right now it's got a Yamaha 25 M (I think) on it.

I might try a Fury next and see how that works.

I know this hull like the back of my hand. The best JP setting for all out performance will be 3.25" dead on pad to center shaft. **note** ............at this setting the boat will not use very much if any positive trim when running flat out at WOT. The height of the JP will lift the hull. Hull should hook up and once hooked up (on full pad) then you can put a little trim to it to pull nose to your preference. 3.5" will do dandy also, but for all out performance the 3.25" is best.................Keep in mind that these numbers will work out better with a "known" good 3 blade prop also. Once boat is on pad, you can hit trim and when properly set up the boat will throw very little to no roostertail. this is what you are striving for...................no "tail" means that the boat is pushing the boat forward.....................faster; and not using engines energy to hold the boat up......................good luck and let us know what she does.....................................RR P.S If you go with a Fury, set pad to center at 3.5" and no higher. The Fury likes to run deeper than the Tempest or comprable 3 blade prop.................................

I've got a 25 tempest and 25 fury if you want to test. You just need to get the hub kit for the yammie to run them. My boat hated the 25m yammie prop.

Thanks for the offer Brent. i might want to take you up on that one afternoon at Buckhorn

Roger - thanks for the response. What you said makes a lot of sense. What kind of speed numbers should I be able to get out of this boat / motor if properly set up?

It may be a couple weeks before I get to go out but I'll keep you posted.

71 to 73 properly set up with correct prop. My old 519 Nascar would run 74 and change (GPS) with tx load and only me in the boat. These boats will run and are a ball to drive and fish out of.......................good luck and let us know what she does Sir.........................RR

Balancing the boat and having the prop blue printed will help out alot also..

Re: Ranger 198 VX Manual Jackplate Height (rtinplnc)

Most props out of the box are not balanced and all blades aren't tru in pitch. A blueprinted prop is worth 3+ mph on most boats. Mark Croxton on the prop board is the best around.

........blueprinting makes the prop perfect in its rotation on the engine...................each blade is perfected and balanced on the wheel so it will spin perfect on the engine..........................RR

Roger, does this explain why I saw my water pressure drop fairly quick? The boat did run great, I was just worried about water pressure, but maybe what I was seeing was ok?

I noticed the boat is MUCH more stable because the motor is more vertical and not cranked up. Actually, the stability of the boat is what has impressed me the most about adding the jack plate...the speed is just a bonus, IMO

You think this is true with any motor? I have a 2.5L Merc, but I have heard this hull "really runs" with a 3.0L. Best I saw in Sept was 67.0, 2 guys, standard gear, 1/2 tanks, stock Tempest.

I can't wait for spring much longer. I'm going to go crazy.

Re: Ranger 198 VX Manual Jackplate Height (519DVX)

The numbers that I quoted were with my 3.0 Evinrude. The 2.5's prolly don't have enough "grunt" to get there............................close, but prolly not quite there Sir. The BB'd prop will run better than the "Stocker" will on your boat also. ...................................RR
