    Parts Help

    http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=767339

I also posted this on the Mercury Forum, but I have heard that the boat manufacturer spec's out the harness and there are many to choose from.

My main cable running from the dash to the motor has a break in the ground. Everything runs fine, but the kill switch does not work when the motor is turned to the right. I was able to isolate the issue with an electrical meter so I know FOR SURE I'm replacing the correct thing. I called Ranger Parts and they do not carry the part anymore. The only thing they could give me was a Part Number R-014, but this did not come up when I went to the Mercury Parts website.

Can anyone offer me any advice? I'd like to get this part ordered so I have it in-hand when I get my boat from storage in a couple months.

    Thanks in advance!

    Dave

Why not run a wire from the dash to the motor and make it your ground wire bypassing the bad ground in the harness. I would splice it to the ground under the dash and land it on the ground at the battery negative connection. $5.00 worth of wire vs $200.00 for a new wiring harness and just as functional.

I would email Don Weed (parts@europeanmarine.org) and I bet he can fix you up. Assuming that's a Mercury part you need...

I thought about doing this, and will if it's my last resort. I'm not a "band-aid" type of guy to begin with, but for safety and peace of mind, I would rather replace the whole harness. Currently, my "only" issue is the kill switch doesn't work properly. Yes, it is unsafe, but there is very little chance something will go wrong enough to eject me. Also, I have a hotfoot, so the motor will at least go to idle and not continue at 60+ mph in the direction of travel. My big fear is that if one wire is broken in that cable, what's to say other wires aren't damaged and just need some more bending cycles before they break. I could be out in the middle of the lake in 6 footers when it decides to go and then my motor won't run at all.

You really need the kill switch working. Too many have a lax attitude about using the life vest and kill switch but they saved me once. Riding in a tournament we were both ejected at 60 mph. It was sudden, unexpected, and catastrophic. If it wasn't for those two things I know I would have drowned as the impact knocked the wind out of me and I couldn't swim for the boat till things had settled down.

Uh, yeah, I believe that's why I'm hear asking people if they can help me find the correct part. Like I said, I don't want to put a band-aid on it, I want to fix it correctly. I've been actively chasing this problem for well over a year, and I even took it to the closest dealer (3 hours away) where it was for 6 weeks and could not find it. I finally have the issue isolated and want to order the part so I have it in-hand when I get the boat out of storage. I would hardly call this a lax attitude.
