I am installing a Lowrance skimmer transducer, not side imaging, to replace a thru hull transducer.
I am not sure what the best position is. Can someone provide some insight and possibly pictures?

Are you trying to install that skimmer on the outside of the hull? You do know it can be used as a "shoot through".
Shoot through is the only way to go.
I am installing HDS -7 and am concerned about losing definition by going thru the hull.
Valid concern?
Your transom-mounted is the most effective, can be serviced and adjusted and they are designed by their manufacturerss to perform at optimum when making direct, unobstructed contact with the water. Installation damages are common and can be avoided and they are susceptable to damage when fishing rocks and timber. Transducer installation and optimization issues comprise the majority of marine electronics troubleshooting.
