Distilled white vinegar mixed with water 50/50 works great. I keep a spray bottle in my storage compartment and use it right after I pull boat out of water.![]()
If you are talking about water spots on the cowling, I would not use vinegar and water. I'd use a gentile cleaner and then use BBS after every trip to the lake.
If you are talking about the crud/deposits that build up on the mid section of the motor, then vinegar and water might work or CLR as someone else mentioned.

For water spots best solution as previously noted is half vinegar and half water. After it's clean protect your surface with BTS then you won't have near the water spot problems you currently are having.![]()

Glass cleaner works for me...
I USE 303 UV PROTECTANT ALL OVER MY WHOLE RIG NO WATER SPOTS
I know this sounds crazy but toilet bowl acid cleaner works very good.I use it a few times a year when the normal wipe down leftovers build up.Been doing it for over 30 years and it does not damage paint.I wouldn't use it everytime.

I have used a product fron Meguiars calles "Water Spot Remover". Comes in a spray bottle. The solution is thick so it sit on area you spray to break the spots down.

Calcium, lime and rust remover.

I use BTS but after reading an article I purchased some Peregrine 250. That has done the best job for me. It's safe to use on boat, motor, and vehicle. My back splash area also get's lots of spots, espcially since that area is black in color and that Peregrine 250 took all the spots off and off the Merc as well.
I still use BTS for wax / protective coating.
Here's an interesting thread on the Peregine 250: http://thebbz.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=541
