I would put it next to the console. Like this:

There is a circular base plate you can get that I have on mine. It is a spacer that gives the GPS unit about 1/2 inch of lift. I like it because it runs the wires through a hole under the plate and they come out through a precut hole in the side of the spacer keeping everything neat. I think the curve in the plastic spacer also helps keep the wires protected, The only wires that will show is from the spacer up 6 inched to the GPS unit. Another benefit to the spacer is you can easily change electronics without re drilling your boat.
The spacer is not a bird or lowrance part. There are several companies that make them.
