should i find a different mechanic

    haven't need one before. i have a 99 175 intruder that sat for 1 1/2 years. i:
    drained fuel
    installed new impeller
went to the lake for a try and it was hard to start (figured that) got it going idled fine after a bit then it ran good on and off (water psi good idling going accross lake ect.) then died a few times. now it won't start.
anyhow the mechanic i called right off said it's the power head he can be out tue.
the question is does that sound right?? or did some bad fuel in the filter/lines get me. and does oil go bad?
i'm very mechanicly inclined but the most complex i've gotten on a boat is the impeller anything i can try or check or just find another mechanic
BTW i tried a new filter

Wow that is great guess on his part. Won't start so the PH is blown. Get or borrow a compression tester and check compression before he comes out that way you'll know he isn't trying to stick you. Check for spark on all cylinders and make sure your kill switch is attached.

Fly fred out to look at it. It would probably cheaper than a Power Head.

Re: should i find a different mechanic (ryecreek)

well did get that fer yet BUT
it will high idle out of gear(fires right up)@1500-2000rpm but will not idle at all
    choke not working?
    fuel lines bad?
    carb issue?
    pwr pack?
or the pwr head like he said
at hi idle runs perfect no misses just won't idle
guess i should have tried that always started @ idle

    Ryecreek,
I don't know your mechanical skills or if you local guy is OMC/BRP trained. If you have some skills then purchase a OMC/BRP shop manual from your local dealer. Make sure you get one for your model year. This is an excellent source of info and gives you step by step procedures. You said you drained the gas, did you drain it from the tank or carbs? If you didn't drain the carbs you probably got some old gas still in the fuel system. As the gas comes out of the tank into the Vapor seperator tank and then into the VRO and the fuel rails. A good place to start would be to pull the carb drain plugs out of all the carbs and by using the primer bulb keep squeezing the bulb so all the fuel passes through say for about a minute (NO SCHAMOKING) keep a water hose handy(actually take the sprayer off and run the hose on low pressure) an insert it in the rear of the starboard belly pan. After about a minute stop purging the fuel and replace the drain plugs. re-prime the fuel line. Verify that the maintenance valve (red lever) on the primer solenoid is pointing down. And resinstall the airbox (remember to attach the upper and lower hoses to the box). Thouroughly flush the belly pans with water and the surrounding area to let the gas desolve. And try it again. This should help. If not then you are looking at a carb rebuild. As A NOTE this procedure is best done off of a concrete or paved driveway .

    hey thanks i'll try that
as far as skills i'd rate my self very skilled(i'm my own warranty center for everything from quads to a d-9 dozer including new diesel trucks) just never done boat work nor do i have the special tools. pretty much if it's in a book i can do it, i have a generic book seems good vs. generic auto books but as you said fact. manual would be nice where would be a good place to get one

Your local Evinrude dealer. They'll order you one just give them your Model number and they'll get it for you. No need for a parts catalog as that is available online.
