    Primer bulb

Here goes, had some of the same syptoms as a lot of people lately.. 98 200 Johnson venom on 98 201 pro.. Had idle and sync adjusted a few weeks ago.. last couple of times out idle is smooth, stomp on hot foot and nothing(motor bogs and dies) So notice that the primer bulb isn't getting hard when pumped. head out and buy new bulb, still doesn't get hard. Go and buy a different brand and same thing.. It is getting gas flowing through just not getting that hard feel to it.. looked around and see no anywhere.. What else should i look for?

Also if i rev the engine a bit and slap it in gear quick ican get it to catch and run. Once it gets up it runs smooth. any toughts?

    Re: Primer bulb (jrc27)

Jim your problem is different as you have a 90* motor. If you aren't feeding fuel to your motor then you need a new VRO/OMS pump #5007420 and it will solve your issues.

    Re: Primer bulb (jrc27)

I have been having the same problem with my 2000 Johnson 225HO, It starts and runs good until I stop and fish for an hour or so, then it bogs and dies when I start to move. If I rev it up a couple times or bump the choke it will go on then. I have replaced the OMS, rebuilt the carbs, checked the sync and link adj. new plugs, primer bulb, t-stats, checked all the recir. valves, and still have the same problem. If you have any luck fixing it please let me know what you find, I hope this will save you some time and money. Good luck with it. Bulletpilot

What does a new pump cost? can you buy used? is there anyway to test a pump?

What exactly does the VRO/OMS pump do?

$351.90. There are procedures in the service manual to test it.

    Re: Primer bulb (Robbie)

Same story different verse. Mine is a 96 johnson 115 that is doing pretty much the same thing. fires right up, I go to put it in gear and it bogs and dies. If I get it bumped fast enough and above 1200 RPM it will take off and run like a top. After its been running awhile I can idle it down to 1000 or so and it runs like a top. Its just after start-up. Really not wanting to buy a 300 dollar pump, hopefully someone has some other suggestions

which model? A model number would help they made two different 115's.

Would changing over to mixing the Fuel/oil allow a different pump(hopefully cheapr) to be used?

E115SLEDR is the model number and its a 96. Looking at the parts diagram it is apparent that the pump also pumps oil correct? If so, thats sort of a scary thought to run the boat with a weak pump if that is actually the problem. Also, does anybody remanufacture or offer a rebuild kit for these pumps?

    Re: Primer bulb (Iowabass3826)

I don't think in my case it would hurt the enngine since i still have 1/2 tank of pre mix due to break in. Could this cause any of the issues i am having? Also what does the solenoid with the red lever control?

    Re: Primer bulb (jrc27)

I am having the exact same problem with my 97 vindicator 225...It runs well when I first crank it up in the AM and runs great once I am rolling, but after I have been fishing for awhile it stalls when I go to put the throttle down...It will sit there and Idle fine, but once I start to put a load on it it stalls...Once I get it running and get it up on plane it runs fine...HELP!!!

No re manufacturer of the pumps they are a toss away item. Yes there is a rebuild kit available but by the time you piece part everything it is quicker for us (mechanics) to just replace the VRO/OMS. If you decide you want to re-build yours the parts are in the accessories catalog. Also on your motor look at the throttle roller/Timing arm adjustment posted on the heat soak thread.

That's your electric primer. The primer pumps fuel/oil mixture directly into the intake manifold for cold startup. On my boat, I push the ignition key in to prime. You can also switch the red lever, and this allows you to manually prime the intake by squeezing the fuel bulb. On mine, there's also a schraeder valve, which is used for decarbing.
