I have a 721 SHO combo with about 13 hours on the motor. It seems like most folks are going 75+ mph with this combo.
With a light load, I am only getting 73 and then the chine walking gets the best of me and I have to trim it down a little. I sent an IM to one of the owners here and he helped me with some of the changes but all I can get is 73.
Suggestions?
More info? Rpm's, prop, engine height?

As best as I can tell, the motor started out about 1.5" below pad and I raised it about .75" with the same results.
5750 to 5800 rpms
stock 27T1 prop
Now I am going to enter dumb question territory. Bear with me on this one
Is the "Pad" considered the part of the hull that has the drain plug in it or the part with the livewell overflows?

I haven't set one up with a SHO but I'm only a couple of hours away. If you want to run it over here, we'll see what we can get out of it.

ok. As best as I can tell, I lowered it to 3 1/4" below the pad (where the drain plug is). It seems to be a little over 1" below how it was set at the factory.
And I got the 2 yr old in bed.
how many rpms should I be turning?
Do y'all have to trim it real high to get the most speed? Seems to me like the lower the motor is in the water, the higher you will have to trim it to get the bow out of the water and the more likely it will be to chine walk. But then again, I was confused on which part of the hull was the pad.
Can someone explain how all of the variables work together? Heighth, trim, prop, rpms etc

You are also losing 10 to 12 hp due to weather conditions in your area. Temps and RH are high.
After you get your set up correct (start at 3.5 or 3.25 below the pad). you will see differences with more time on your engine and cooler dryer weather conditions. I would leave the prop alone until you see how you are doing.
I am thinking that the 27 will be great for winter but a 26 or 25 may be better for the hotter months. The other option is to just live with it and cruise accordingly.
Also I think the extra loading of the 27 is good for you right now with the breakin/oiling issues.
The best I have achieved has been 73.8 at 5500 rpm with 4 BIG batteries (300lbs) and moderate equipment load. But it has been hot as Hades here in Texas and I am losing 10-15 hp due to weather conditions.
Don't forget to enjoy the boat at cruising speeds. It runs great!

Yamaha's like to be run a little high. With a light load you should still be able to run that 27 in the summer months, if you are turning 5700 that is pretty good, I think. Sounds like you just need more seat time to get used to the chine and drive thru it. That is the hardest part about getting the max speed out of any boat.
One of the Yamaha Techs ran my 721 with a new prototype 26 pitch that Yamaha will have available soon. We were at the FLW Champ at Lake Ouachita in AR. Hot and humid there for sure. He had the plate almost all the way up when he came in, much higher than I normally run it. But he was turning that 26 at 6000 and running mid 76mph. He said he ticked 77 a couple of times, but strong mid 76 on several runs.
Last tournament mine was in was at Lake Mead in Las Vegas, NV. 105+ temps, but not as humid as back east. With partner and fish in livewells, she ran between 72-74 over 3 different days.
The Phoenix is an amazing boat, with a super smooth ride and pretty dang fast. The Yamaha SHO is one amazing motor and I'm happy to have it. The other power plants are good also, but I don't think you can beat that new 4stroke!
Thanks for the information. I ran it last night with it at 3.5 inches below pad and I only got to 72.5. I did have two people and the dual console was installed. Hopefully I can meet up with Scott soon and he can help me to deal with the chine walking.
Please don't confuse my questions here with dissatisfaction of the boat or motor. I LOVE the boat and LOVE the motor. Just trying to get the most out of it.

In cooler weather this will make a difference...
P.S. Your rig is running great ....don't get bogged down with every tenth of a mph like some of these guys do...enjoy your rig both fishing and cruising.

I am not being rude by saying this but learn to drive it. It is like learning to ride a bike. I learned on a Tr-20x so when I got to the phoenix it was a cakewalk.
I certainly don't take these suggestions rudely. I really appreciate everyone's help. This is just my first high performance bass boat and I need some help figuring out how to drive it at the top end.
