    250 HP fuel consumption

I am looking to rep owner my boat with a 250 HP engine and have been researching fuel consumption at the rpm range I typically run at. I was able to find information on 3 of the 4 I am interested in. Please chime in if you know where to find the data for a Mercury 250 XS

    OUTBOARD FUEL CONSUMPTION

    MERCURY
    250 Verado 4K rpm = 7.8 gph, 5K rpm = 15.7 gph

    250 XS PRO =. ??

    HONDA
    BF 250, 4K rpm = 7.4 gph 5K rpm = 13.9 gph

    YAMAHA
    F 250, 4K rpm = 11.3 gph, 5K rpm = 17.4 gph

Those numbers are useless unless the testing was done on identical hull setups.

If your worried about fuel consumption you should look at an Allison.........mpg are a result efficiency and the by product is speed.

Here is a link to the Mercury Marine test on a Nitro Z9 boat. They also did a test on the Z8 boat. If your boat is similar in size and hull design, it will give you a ball park estimate. https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/...units=imperial

My thoughts exactly, My pro xs burns alot less than the EFI 250 I took off. I never really cared how much gas i burned.

I'm with you Grandpa. I always wonder why when a guy makes a serious post a bunch of stupid responses are made.

With today larger boat, you need a 250 to get them out of the hole. Doesnt mean you need to run it 70+ every where you go. the different in 50 mph and wide open in my boat is roughly 10-12 gallons an hour. Back a few years when gas was 4.00 a gallon that is an extra 40 to 50 dollars an hour. If one brand saves you 10 to 15 dollars running the same speed an hour some, as the OP might consider the saving.

Guess its nice you dont have to worry with dropping a hundo every time you go out.

If its all about fuel burn hourly then the Pro XS will be best. Keep in mind that there is more to consider like oil use and service, as well as user satisfaction.

My boat is getting the best gph (about 4.6) at about 3500 rpms according to my Smartcraft gauge. I very rarely run at WOT.

i understand that but look at grandpa living on a fixed income or just anybody worried how much fuel cost ! What happens when they blow there motor up or have machanical failure? Saving 10 to 15 dollars an hour is not going fix squat.

My 250XS uses a LOT LESS gas than my 200 EFI did! The Opti's sip gas unless @WOT. Everything guzzles at WOT.

Go with the honda from a johnson guy
I have my 1999 225 ho johnson getting a little over 4 mpg as long as I keep it under 50 mph. Not bad for 6 big old thirsty carbs

I did a lot of research on this a few years ago. The Honda was hands down better than any of them. Never checked the Verado, just too many many parts for me (supercharger). I can't remember the numbers, but it was pretty significant. But as I said this was awhile ago.

I had a 250 SHO and a 250 Pro XS on the same hull. l cruise a lot, and don't run WOT too often. The Pro XS was a little easier on fuel. You have not mentioned anything about access to good service for your new motor, which is an important factor for many when choosing an outboard brand.
