Motor chokin out trying to power on trailer....

    Here we go.. I have a Johnson 225 model J225HGLSI serial G 04915244
I fished all day no prob.. had almost half tank left trying to power up on trailer and the motor chokes down.. wouldnt build any rpm.... started right back up.... did it 3 times.... backed off the trailer ran it ... rumped right on pad ran right up in rpm no probs.... went to put it back on trailer and it acted like might do it again but didnt. when I say choked out its like it will idle no prob but as soon as you give it gas it dies out..... any ideas???? Thanks super gurus! I dont think it was to steep an angle to cause fuel delievry probs.... I had my spenilli on normally I run raker but I dont think that would have anything to do with it???? the spenilli has no vent holes and I haveto run a blow out ring

You have a reply to your IM.

For those reading this, sync and link is a procedure that assures the timing and throttle move at the right time as most all carb motors need timing before throttle.

If sync and link is off and the motor gets throttle before timing it may seem to run fine but things like loading on the trailer may cause the motor to bog and die.

This is a place to start, there are a list of things that must happen in order for a motor to perform correctly.

Now. if you have a 60 degree carb motor this does not apply as this is the only OMC motor that needs timing and throttle at the same time.

you also may need to replace the recycle valves, had that problem with my 200 and when fred replaced them like a totally new motor! just a thought and cost maybe 60 bucks

Under the flywheel is a arm that rotates the timing advance. Sometimes this little arm will come unattached from the linkage to the throttle, carbs, etc.. and it will not advance the timing - no power is the result. This short arm is on the driver side and has a slight bend with a 90 degree bend on the end. this end is what usually comes out of the plastic clip on the throttle linkage. Get a new clip and do not lube the new one. It will stay i place then. Just my .02

What about checking for the clear plastic sleeve that slides over the roller on the throttle advance? Not enough timing at idle would cause it to fall on it's face too....:)

Re: Motor chokin out trying to power on trailer.... (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

Yep that happened to me with my 70hp. Just would not start when hot. I noticed that the plastic sleeve over the roller was damaged (had a flat spot). I removed the plastic sleeve completely, reset the roller so it was JUST touching the cam at the mark & it has been perfect ever since. It is important that the throttle butterflies are all exactly in sync as well. Just get a workshop manual & it usually has all the pictures to help.
