Newbie with a nitro, having some problems with throttle.

I grew up on the water, we always had boats. But with my dads health failing we stopped boating. Fast forward a few years, I decided last weekend to get a boat, my first boat.

I picked up a 1994 nitro 170 DC Rick clunn with a 115 evinrude. When I purchased it, I gambled and didn't put in on the water with the previous owner. We just ear muffed it, andfired it up in the drive. Today I was finally able to put the boat out on the water. Took me a little bit to get it started, flooded it at first lol.


Finally got her fired up and left the ramp. When the boats in neutral it will rev out to 6k, but when in gear it wouldn't rev over ~2700 rpm. I tried trimming up, and down. It's got a 20 pitch stainless prop, wondering if that's too steep?

On on the plus side, for trolling it worked just fine! And the 70lb trolling motor up front worked great.

So after a couple hours on the water I just have a couple questions.

What is the white flipper/switch on the bottom of the boat at the back? Has a small vacuum looking tube on it.

And would not "being on plane" cause it to not rev up and go faster?

Little "white flipper" is a water pickup for the speedometer.
Not being on plane would not cause engine to rev, it needs to rev up to get on plane. I would check the fuel system, not getting enough fuel will limit reving lf the engine.

And never rev the motor like that in neutral. It will go boom quickly.

Step one take a compression test make sure you are not waisting your time! Step 2 put new plugs in it ! And always have extras with you ! Step 3 clean carbs ! Bet that will ether tell you what's wrong or fix it ! At very least the test will tell you what shape your motor is in ! You can have a bad cylinder in a motor will run fine with muffs but put boat in water put in gear under a load ( turning prop ) will not receive up ! That's why everyone always say's test them on the water ! Same for jetskis I would test everything ! But probably carbs gumed up ! I would also replace file line and bulb ! Good luck !
