If I understand this, you've bought a boat without either a test drive or a mechanic's check? You don't mention whether you've even seen this rig. I wouldn't buy something from my own mother without those two checks. I wish you luck, but you may be headed for an expensive lesson.
Well sorry I did not post my whole life story but I have been in this boat this year already and I'm sorry you can't trust your family
oh boy, defensive much??
Take a deep breath BIGRED! JDW wasn't attacking you, he was just getting the point across that you REALLY should have this boat/engine looked at first, as there was no indication that you had even ever seen this boat in your life in your original post. So exhale now and relax...They said it had a knock in the engine but the day before it didn't....that's a very ominous sign my friend. Knocking engines that "drive ok" should be sending up a huge RED flag and it may cost you a ton of money. No compression check, no mechanic giving it a thorough look - family or not, that's a hell of a gamble with your money.....but alas, good luck!

I'm not dead yet.....competition is the life blood of any human being
So, I have a question...IF the motor blows the powerhead on your next outing, there won't be one single hard feeling towards your brother in law for selling you a boat with a time bomb on the back of it? If you'd honestly be fine with that, then you did the right thing and everybody can go pound sand. But, if you have to spend 3K or more on a new powerhead...and I honestly hope that never happens...I hope it doesn't cause any problems in the family. The fastest way, from my 63 years of life experience, to have problems with family/friends, is to do business or loan money unless everyone is 110% OK with the transaction and knows up front all possible issues that might arise.
Then, you have nobody to blame but yourself, and that's fine too.
Otherwise, glad to see you got a boat, and welcome to the site. There is a vast amount of knowledge here about a multitude of subjects, so don't take your marbles and go home yet...![]()
I had a relative (who shall remain nameless) who bought a boat with a bad motor from another relative (who shall remain nameless). Relative 2 knew it was bad and pawned it off on relative 1 anyway without telling him, and it died in the middle of a lake in a thunderstorm and had to have nearly 1500$ worth of work to get it running again. The whole part of that family tree pretty much split over this. Siblings haven't spoken to each other in years because of it...
