Looking for a steering wheel and hub...

Hey guys, looking for a steering wheel and hub (gold) for my outlaw. For whatever reason my boat has a cheapo black wheel sans a hub. Let me know if you have one or know where to get one. The Gambler store did have some of the hubs but they are out of comission at the moment and if I recall they were pretty proud of them...

^^Like this one but with the gold center.

Good luck on finding that wheel and hub.

It's made by Formuling (sp) .

I had a 1990 183 GT and could not find that wheel and hub.

Re: Looking for a steering wheel and hub... (TheDuke)

Thanks for the info guys. I performed my 4th attempt at getting my old wheel off last night and no avail. If I didn't know better I would swear there was something holding the wheel on other than the bolt and washer...I tried soaking with kroil, Im using a two arm puller. In fact the back of the wheel is bending and still not budging. I also think in the process I damaged the steering shaft because now I can't get the center bolt to thread back on. Help please guys.

The steering shaft is tapered and keyed.
It's amazing how aluminum bonds to steel when it corrodes.

Leave the nut on, flush with shaft threads, then use a small piece of soft metal to cover nut and threads.
Use a 3 jaw puller, put tension on puller and "shock" the puller with a hammer.

    BEST OF LUCK!

Is there anything I can get to help release the wheel from the shaft?

It will come off if you use the method I posted.

Make sure you are just grabbing the steering wheel hub and not the helm hub.

Any suggestions as to what to use to put over the bolt and threads? Thanks JAZ for all your input.

I cant believe it is that hard, mine came off fairly easy.

You can also get the gold bezels for your gauges at Rex marine for a good price.

Good luck on the wheel and hub, i know it's not a fun job.

If it still wont come off with what jazz is telling you to do you can try a heat gun with the pulley in place. Just take your time and heat it evenly all the way around. That alum will transfer heat pretty quick. Be careful not to hit it too hard or too much so you dont damage the helm shaft or seals.

I am going to pull mine soon with the windshield rails and rope cleats to have them power coated gold to match the gold stripe and gauges.

If it came out of Florida everything is hard to get off. . Mine came out of Jacksonville, wont do that again. When i replaced the carpet i had 100 pounds of Fla. sand in the driveway.

YOU NEED TO PULL ON THE STEERING WHEEL "HUB", NOT THE STEERING WHEEL.
A three jaw puller will work better than the two jaw you have now.

Anything that will fit between the puller and bolt that is softer than the bolt and shaft threads. Small piece of aluminum or brass.

Re: Looking for a steering wheel and hub... (flubyu)

Well I finally managed to get the wheel off. I did damage the shaft in the process, but about an hour of filing but the nut did go back on...
