On a engine that old, i'd go ahead and update to the newer style OMS pump, or disable the vro and premix. This question is like opening a can of worms as everyone has an opinion on which is better and whether failed vro's are the root of as many motor problems as they get the blame, but with the premix or the new pump you shouldn't have to worry.
Upgrade to the oms system and never worry about premixing!! OMC/BRP has the best system out there!!!
you wouldnt happen to know where to get the oms system???

This site has always had the best prices I have found. You will have to call them on the price though.
I personally like the VRO, because when you pre-mix, you either need to add oil, and then a set amount of gas, or you end up filling the tank to full of gas to get the oil in, plus its messy. Oil spills all over stuff.
I had a premix engine, its a PITA. Make sure yours is using oil or upgrade.

dont save money buying an aftermarket or a not from BRP one. I have had mine go out and it is funny everytime so far ( knock on wood) the oiler has never failed only the diafram in the fuel pump has or the fuel pump itself. I have on the Big Guru's advise always spent the extra money on a BRP one and well it sure has saved me power heads. you can change out the fuel only but then it is almost the same price and the olier comes off too so getting a new one complete is best. cost here in Ga/sc is about 6-10 bucks cheaper then the price posted and that is from the E/J dealer closest to me.
