I am turning 5400-5600 rmps at WOT. Is this to low? I am wondering if I am lugging the motor.

I believe your are in the ballpark at 5600 rpms. Ideally, you want to prop it for 5800 rpms.

Mine runs the same rpm with a 4 blade Renegade.
My 2004 Owners manual says and I quote"Full throttle operating range-(200)- 5000-6000"
"Power-(200)200HP(149.2KW) at 5750RPM"
There is no distinction in the 2004 Operators Guide between a standard and a HO model.
So you should prop your motor loaded for 5750 that is the peak of the power band, it is allowed to operate up to 6000, however it has been my experience that all the ghurus say do not run theseDI motors in excess of 5800 very often.
The problem with propping at a given RPM is most are trying to do this with a boat mounted tach and most all of theses are off at least a couple hundred RPM's, and most of them read low so if you prop to 5750 you could be turning in excess of 6000.
The only way to know what the motor is really turning is to use the Diagnostic Software.
I had a new power head put on last july. The rpm gauge on the boat was pretty accurate as the diagnost said that I had not turned over 5900 rpms. (I was runniing a different prop 26 tempest + at the time and turning 5800rpms.)
With the new power head the 26 tempest now turns 5900+ rpms. I have since put on a 27 tempest + with a lot of cup and I turn 5400-5600 depending on load. I have also sent my 26 t+ to the prop shop here to put more cup in it to lower rpms and more lift.
I don't want to damage the new power head by lugging that is my concern till I get the 26 back.
Thanks to all.![]()
I like your thinking on saving the power head, and none of the ghurus here are fond of turning these engines over 5800...........
My tach shows 5900 rpms, Rustys software shows 5700 rpms. So my tach is off 200 rpms!! And most are. Some are off the wrong way. It's not a bad idea to get your engine checked after you run it a little.
What about the 2001 johnson 225 ho??? I understant it to be 6200max
