    What size trolling motor

I currently have a 70# MinnKota and was wondering what size is best to push this heavy boat (20ft)I know a variable speed would help but am looking to see what others have..

With a TM you can't go big enough. Put the biggest sucker you can fit on it.

On my HP 180 I still have the stock 70 but will go to the 80 if it ever brakes. I would go bigger but dont have room for more batteries.

Mine is a 80# I think. When G3 replaced my boat last year, the new boat came with it.

Trent does the 80ld do good mine has the 70 and it's not really enough on the windy days...plus I think if I get a Variable speed it would be better as well.

The 80# holds well, and I really like the variable speed. 0 - 100% instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 speed. You can turn it down to where it just barely spins.

Re: What size trolling motor (Crosseye)

My Hp180 came with a 55# 12 volt 5 speed - Lived with it for 4 years - two batteries in parallel. Recently replaced with a MK Maxxium 80# - grabbed a good deal from Cabela's - shaft is a little long but that isn't all bad. Pulled new 6 gauge wire installed a Ranger style 50 amp braker. Overall quality is much better and holds on Lake Lanier windy points much better. The 62 in shaft keeps the motor in the water no matter how large the wake. The 100% level will just about dump you in the water.

I got the 67lb Motor Guide on my 02 HP180, one day I'll up grade to at least 80 lb thrust.

Re: What size trolling motor (alh7498)

Mine came with a 52lb thrust on an HP180. Upgraded to a MG 71lb thrust and it does much better! Holds well in the wind and current of the Potomac. No room for a third TM battery otherwise, I would have gone to 100+ lb thrust. Like others, I believe you can't have too much TM power - afterall, that's what the variable speed switch is for!

I have an 2006 Eagle 175, I put a Minn Kota 80lb on it. I think it came with a 42lb Maxxum which was grossly underpowered
    Question everything!

    What size trolling motor

My Pro 175 came with a 48lb Minn from the dealer, 1st owner replaced it with a 54lb Motorguide which is still on the boat. For a 12v setup, it has plenty of power for me. I have considered upgrading to 24v and increased power but I just cannot justify the expense since my 54lb'er has no problem lastint all day on my normal 10-12 hour day.
