Lowrance Point 1 GPS worth it?

I recently made the switch after several years. I converted from the bird to Lowrance. Finally got my units installed this week. Only thing about Lowrance is they know how to break the bank with all the add ons and accessories. After dropping the extra cash for the NMEA 2000 starter kit, ethernet cable, and a few other things is the point 1 worth the $199? Everyone I have talked to likes it, but they haven't used the unit without it. Just wondering if it was a must have or just a nice add on?

    Thanks

The Point 1(heading sensor/gps receiver) is definitely worth it. Install it on the back as close to your rear transducers as you can get it. Then, set your console unit gps data source to that antenna. Set the front unit GPS source to its own internal antenna and set both units to use the heading sensor capability of the Point 1. When done and on the trolling motor, the gps arrow will always be aligned with the boat regardless of which way the boat is drifting off the waypoint. It then becomes much simpler and quicker to get the boat headed back to the waypoint you are fishing. This may not seem like much until you have actually experienced it...at least it was like that for me.

Well, it depends. If you are a bank beater it will really not justify itself to you. If you like to fish off shore waypoints/structure it is the best thing you can buy!! I fish a lot of waypoints and structure that is off shore so knowing my real relation to that spot at all times is very important. The thing I hated the most before I had the Point 1 was that you could have a waypoint right beside you...but if the wind blew you back away from where you stopped....the map would rotate 180 degrees because the unit detected you were traveling the other direction...and your waypoint would now be showing that it was on the other side of the boat. The units internal gps only detects movement....and when it detects movement it turns the map because it thinks you are "heading" that direction. The Point 1 knows the direction your bow is pointed "heading" AND can show you in what direction "course" your boat is drifting in relation to the direction your bow is pointed. So with this information, your map will NOT spin or rotate as you drift around and your heading line will ALWAYS be the direction your bow is pointed. This can be priceless information when fishing off shore waypoints and structure. I hope some of that made sense...I am kinda sleepy. But I recommend it.

I would say yes for offshore fishing, looking or structure and holding a point, it is free right now if you buy touch 7, 9 or 12 inch gen 2 check out the rebates on Lowrances, or call Matt at Bass and gas Kentucky lake

You will appreciate it once you get it put on. They are more accurate and show the direction the boat is moving.

Changed the way I fish. Eliminates time searching for the off shore brush and Rick piles that I have waypointed. You don't have to "guess" which direction from the boat they are.

i just wish the garmin version was as cheap as the point 1 or humminbird version. I just paid $700 for the garmin version but its a real heading sensor

For Point 1, do you need the NMEA network box or can two HDS units be used (I have an HDS 5 gen 1 and a HDS 8 Gen 2)?
