I really thought the BRP would announce atleast one of the smaller E-TEC's at the Miami boat show. Yeah I know there is more focus on the larger outboards down that way, but with absolutely nothing smaller than a 40hp in the E-TEC line...dealers gotta have something to sell to the walleye and hp restricted guys.

I've seen too many Tohatsu/Merc and Yamaha kickers on the transom next to the big E-TEC's.

imho evinrude could clean up in the below 40 hp market. just look at the power to weight ratio on the other 9.9 -20-25-& 30 hp engines. remember when a 9.5 or 9.9 hp was considered a portable engine? the older 9.5 weighed 67 lbs...that's portable but when you have a 9.9 4 stroke coming in at 100 plus & look what a 4 stroke 25 weighs.

Don't forget that the 40 hp E-Tec is one of the heaviest 40s on the market, with 109 kg (same as Suzuki 4-stroke 40 hp). Mercury EFI is 98, Tohatsu is 93,5, and even a Hond is only 97. Maybe there is a reason that the smallest Evinrude is 40 hp?

The 40hp E-TEC gets it's extra weight from the large gearcase. I think BRP should look into a smaller gearcase for the 40hp to shed some weight. But when comparing the what the E-TEC's large gearcase does over the smaller of the other brands, I prefer the E-TEC because it handles a loaded boat much better without cavitation.

I hope you are right, as I have just bought one (and not yet tested. It is winter ). I had a 40 VRO from mid 80's (was stolen with the boat), this had a much smaller gearcase, and a smaller propeller hub (so I cannot use the three spare propellers I have lying aroun )

I guess there is some extra weight due to the fact that the same motor comes as 50 and 60 hp, in a normal world this should give little wear and a long lifetime.

    Re: New E-TECS (ChampioNman)

Cman, as you know, I should be getting a new fully dressed powerhead from BRP. Steve is going to put it on, naturally. I was wondering, since this engine is a 2005 model, will the new powerhead be a 2005 or a 2008? Do you know, or could you hazard a guess? Someone told me the ETEC powerheads today are really awesome and I immediately thought, this would be like, a 2008.

Makes me wonder about the warranty on a new one. Will it be like 12 mos. or a full three years like the original engine....(licking my chops here...) I will ask Steve the next time I talk to him, I'm not sure he reads these boards all the time.

Just curious. I can't wait until I get it back!! I'm going to love that ETEC man!

    Re: New E-TECS (Sambone)

Sambone you should be getting a new 2008 powerhead. The 08 head is suppose to have the new updated injectors & increased oiling points . you should be in great shape.
