Pat Goff or other Champion Experts. 1985 176 setup.

I recently got a 1985 Champion 176 Super V it will be powered by a 1979 Mercury v150. From previous posts looks like a 6" rapid jack set 3 3/4 below pad with a 23 tempest would be a good recipe. Can you confirm this or provide further guidance? Thank you.

Sorry for the follow up, but another quick question. Do I need a jack plate? Wondering because didn't see one in the Champions Running Wild videos. Awesome Stuff!

No Expert here, bought my '85 176 FNS slightly used in '86. I think your proposed setup would be a perfect place for you to start. Seem to remember mine rode a little better with the 150 Merc mounted on the transom, but it has been on a 6" JP since shortly after I got it. I have run 24p early Turbo 3 blade for best speed and a 24 p Merc Big Ear for pulling skiers, etc. Tried a 4 blade 23 p Turbo prop for a short time, but I had the motor too high for it to work good.

6" rapid jack plate and a 23" yamaha M prop is the ticket. Tempest is a bit much for that 2.0 l motor.

Thanks for the responses, I'll give the rapid jack and 23m a shot.
I hadn't taken into account the torque and HP difference put out by
the smaller displacement and power head rated 150.
