how fast?
how fast?
Ken...When I had my Cobra the best I ever did was 82.3mph (GPS) but not with a tournament load. I had a 250 Hammer hanging off the back. There was an individual who used to frequent the "old boards" by the name of Terry E. Clinkenbeard from Harrah, OK who ran just a tad faster than me but I can't remember just how fast that was.

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!
I'm getting 70 to 71 on GPS on my '99 201d with an '04 225 EFI on back.I know a guy in Owasso, Ok. who runs 84 in his '98 201d.He's got some work done to it.I don't know if it counts or not,but I had a dream that I broke the triple digits in it a few months ago!!!!Be hard to top,if dreams count!!
I can get 69-70 out of my 00 225 EFI and 201D. Light load with just me though. Turning a 25p Tempest and 8" JP. Use to be a little faster but I went with at 36v TM and a 4bank charger and added more weight. That 225 sure likes to drink though and I don't run much over 45 anymore with the price of petro.![]()
In casual chats with my mechanic he said we could take it up to around 280 hp by flashing the ECU, lightening up the flywheel, porting exhaust and some new reeds.![]()
How much was he talking to get it up to around 280,schoolies?
I think it was around $2,000. With the racing flywheel the most expensive part.
Heck,that isn't that bad.
i have to go back down too moutain home in january for a few days..got busness to take care of...wana meet me for coffie?...etc...excange ideas..etc.. sort of got some ideas i need to talk to some cobra owners about..and tell your govenor too make a flat straight road into your city...![]()
I run 75 average and 77 light with a 225 ProXS. I am using a 12in Slidemaster Jackplate. I couldn't image 80mph![]()
I get 69 Tourney load out of mine with a 25 pitch banged up prop. I would think I could get more if I send the prop to Mark and hang a Jack Plate.
fastest ive run on gps is 73.4 - 201Dc with a 225 Opti and 4 blade 25in trophy on a 8in jackplate.
there's a guy named Cowboy in Vacaville, CA that runs the 201 with a 300 Merc. He states he runs 97mph...a little scary for me.
Hitman
The fastest I've seen from my 99' 201s is 73 gps with a 225 mariner EFI 8" setback and a 26 Raker. I would love to have a 250 Pro XS on the back though.
River Runner
Remember the old viper website and the pics of a 201 going 103.something on a radar gun. Anyone that used to work at the plant want to verify that? I always thought that was 'marketing". (AKA license to lie)
Right at 68 with mine lightly loaded prior to the big blow up. Now 63- 65 depending on weather conditions and load. (how much gas)
Could change, thinking about shaving the heads and putting on a bigger wheel. OH OH OH!!! (Tim Taylor voice)
I'm Running 69-70 mph loaded..running 73-75 mph one person w/ a 26p 4 blade trophy.. 8" set back w/ a little prop work. would love to see how it does w/ a 250 pro xs![]()
Chris, I can't remember the actual speed that Cobra 201D attained but I've got a huge picture that was taken of that boat during its test run hanging in my great room and the only thing in the water is half of one blade of the prop. The rest of the boat is airborne. After coming back down off center the boat basically blew apart because it came down a little off center, violently veered to one side and just about disintegrated with the engine being ripped off the back and ending up in about 30 feet of water. Note: (The driver kept driving around in circles until the waves were huge and then backed off and got a running start before he hitting his waves at over a 100 mph and that's how he became airborne). A radar gun was used to mark the speed.
I'm told that everything from the interior of that boat had been removed, i.e., front deck, TM, all seats except the driver's, all lids, all batteries except the cranking battery, etc. In other words it was basically a bare bones hull with a souped up 300HP Johnson engine hanging off the back.

You're right Larry. We called it Charlie's foam boat. It was never completely built. Just the hull and cap put together and no holes cut out for the lids or anything and full of foam.

Ah yes, hence the term marketing!! "look at what your boat can do if you buy one!!!" (never mind it was stripped down, and flew apart)
Supposedly a Dr. in these parts has a 201 with a 300 on it and all the tricks to try to get it to 100, two speed prop, work on the hull, etc., but upper 90s has been the limit. (97-98) but I do not personally know that for a fact, just have had several locals tell me about it. So, don't take it for gospel. Me? I think it is right.
I just think things are going to happen WAYtoo quick for me at those speeds. If I could get into the 70's that would be awesome!!
Chris...Best I could do under the circumstances but it will at least give you an idea.

Damn...what happened to the boat driver??
