I've heard folks say run the oem oil in your outboard, but what about synthetic oil?
Wouldn't that be better for your engine?

As Long as its Bombardier XD-100...Then Yes, it would be better for your motor.
Ive been running the X-50 in my 1990 150. No smoke at all. Get it from your local dealer, take in a new 2 gallon gas can and mark it for oil so you don't get it confused. Runs 16 a gallon down here.
Same here Curtis, However with the new DI I just dumped a gallon of the xd-100 If I continue to have the low oil usage that I'm having with this engine I will stay with it and not have to decarb every year
Mike I am just trying to burn off the xd-50 so I can switch to xd-100. Boy it takes awhile with these DI's to use it up.![]()
Rusty: Are you reccomending the DI,s change to the XD100??SMG
I am recommending that all 2 stroke Johnson/Evinrude motors switch to XD-50 or XD-100, the 100 is priced a bit high but, if a clean motor is more important than price of oil....then yes, run the XD-100.
I have duck hunters with 1960 model motors running XD-100, no smoke, no carbon buildup.![]()
John is right! If you are running a DI I would switch to the XD-100, if you are running a carbed motor and can afford it run the XD-100, due to the oil consumption of the carbed motors and the lack of oil return lines all the excess goes out the prop so I think XD-50 in bulk is a better deal and do a yearly decarb, both are great oils and the XD-100 is the cats butt. CM![]()
Talked me into it thanks to you both!! Probly should go ahead and decarb since I have run the ficht oil for about 18 mo right?? SMG
Not if you switch to the XD-100, it will clean the carbon.....![]()
My old 200xp doesn't use that much oil..think I'll try the xd-100 looks like some good insurance! Also read about using the turkey baster to draw off the bottom of your oil tank...saved my rear end!!!
That's a good idea, I just pull the oil tank and clean it out before I add the XD-100.
We have been re powering a bunch of older boats with the E-Tec's, Its standard practice to remove the oil tank and clean the tank and screen, drain the supply hose and refill with XD-100.
I run Pennzoil 100% synthetic and it works great also. I run old carbed engines and get very little smoke except at start up (big jets and 32:1 ratio) I am thinking of trying the xd100 oil. The penn. smells good also.
