    Tranducer mounting

I have an 87 185v and I'm about to replace the depthfinder. The old depthfinder has a thru-hull transducer, and it does not work properly. I bought a new depthfinder and it has a transom mount exterior transducer. Any advice on installing the transducer? Like do I want the skimmer flush with the bottom of the boat? Rubber washers for the screws? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Usually a few sideways taps with a hammer will remove the defective ducer, unless it has been installed when they built the boat and resin is covering most of the ducer.. You can install the skimmer (transom) ducer in the bilge area. Just epoxy it in and take care not to have air bubbles under the ducer (follow directions) and use a brick on top of the ducer while curing. I would not want to install anything on the transom except as a last resort.
If you do install on the transom be sure to apply a good (below water grade) silicone or Dow 4200 caulk in the drilled holes before you put in the screws.
