I just picked up a 2008 183 Elite and the speedo needle bounces back and forth with just the key on. It has a Yamaha HPDI motor.
Any ideas? Not sure what kind of gauges they are.

I would first check for corrosion on the connection.
Since your speedo is tied into your gps on your console/dash Lowrance unit, you have to turn on your graph for it to read the speed and it will stop. It will always do this when the Lowrance unit is turned off and you turn the key on.
I don't have a unit mounted in dash at all.
I guess this could be the problem.
How can I wire around this?

Do you have the BIOS gauges in the dash? I am sure you could disable the speedo by the Master menu on the other gauge, Scroll thru the various options and I am sure there one in there either under Analog Inputs/Outputs.

You'll not like the fuel gauge either. I hate by Bios gauges.

Thats the same as the BIOS gauges, Actia makes them. My next question is why do you not have a graph in the dash?? If you look to put one in I am sure it will solve your issue on the speedo.
I have a 997 ram mounted, can I tie into that and what would I need?

I am sure you could loop it in somehow and have your gauge read the speed from your hummingbird. You might have to contact Actia direct for instructions. But i am sure you could inactivate the speedo needle from the other gauge you just need to play with it or get the manual and read it.

Give Actia a call there very helpful and know the gauges real well. If your interested they also can custom make a Needle Fuel gauge and Voltmeter for your Bios gauges. I bought the fuel gauge myself.

Can any speedo be wired to a gps or just certain ones?

Well I talked to the original owner of the boat today and found out it had a Lowrance unit in the dash and was working through the nmea cable.
Does the Humminbird unit not have this?
If I put another Lowrance unit in the dash, where would I get the connector to plug into the gauge?

Since these boats came equipped with Lowrance thru the factory these gauges were set up and he's right it reads the NMEA signal output. Since this is what the GPS pulls the signal from it also feeds over to the needle gauge simultaneously.
This cable is standard with all Lowrance units. You could order one direct from Lowrance or check one of the sponsors on this board I am sure they sell it also.
I'd really like to see your needle gauge for fuel. Thats my only real complaint about my boat.

My 2008 210 bounces from 0-80 back and forth even with the console graph on with key on. No working speedometer....Is this a bad design?
