    Impressive gas mileage

I am underpowered on my 1989 184DCB running a 1985 115hp Merc. The boat is rated for a 175HP and I was not sure I was going to be happy with the 115hp on it.
I know I gave up alot of speed but the gas mileage has been impressive. I only cruise around 32mph and top out at 45mph. I have to be getting 5-6miles per gallon. I only have a 24 gallon tank. I have run a couple of different merc 150's on some 18' hulls and the best I ever got was about 4 miles to the gallon.
I am not sure if it is hull design or the smaller motor or what but I am most impressed with the gas mileage on this boat The ride and handling are just big plus'.
I will be hanging on to this one as it will be my son's knock around and learning boat. He is not going to get into trouble with it and I am gaining more confidence in it everytime I take it out. He is only 12 so we got some time.

I'd be surprised if those were GPS MPH.

Re: Impressive gas mileage (electric fish)

I have found the same results in my 89 184 dcr with a merc force 120 on it. I had thought about going to the 175 but money i save in fuel is worth more to me then the extra 20 mph

I appreciate the confirmation and I did not think I would be happy but I am extremely pleased.

Hate to bust a bubble, but...
A 175 throttled back to the same speed will get better economy than the little guy huffing it.

    Re: (pmgoffjr)

I usually drive my 175 about 35-40mph gps, and my fuel seems to last forever. But then again, my lakes r small.....

I would be unable to keep the throttle down that far, if I had the 175hp it would be drinking

That is why my next boat will be an Allison although I will be keeping this one for my son. He should be able to get through until he is old enough to get another, keep it, or decide it is not for him (doubt it)
