    gas fumes

I have a 2009 champion 206 that I bought brand new in June of 2011. I am noticing a smell of gass fumes in my rod lockers and storage compartments. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Anglers Marine in Anaheim told me that it's normal but I'm having a hard time believing it. Most people i've talked to says it's not normal.
    Thanks

Normal on any plastic fuel tank. Prop open the rear hatch and it will vent. Every boat MFG has had this, Phoenix went to an aluminum tank to fix this.

no kidding???? ok thanks. I keep thinking I have a leak somewhere. I keep my boat in the garage. Will the fumes get to my hot water heater if I prop the rear hatch open? Reason I ask is cause the motor is next to water heater.

And a great fix that probably is.

I do this whenever mine is stored. Keeps down the mildew in the bilge also.

Try contacting the fuel tanks manufactor, shouldn't be to hard to find out who made it.
I'm sure they might have some opinion on why there tanks causes fumes in the lockers.
50k plus boat and that's something you have to live with...
I would be satisfied with that answer .

Yep, pretty common with plastic tanks. Leave a rod locker cracked open.

The tanks are somewhat permeable....gas smell is very common in most brands, as stated earlier. The material is not plastic, but I forget what it actually is made of. Polyethylene, maybe. Some boats seem to have more of an issue that others. Moving air is the key to preventing the odor.

I have never heard that this odor is a fire hazard.

    Re: gas fumes (fid plr206)

There has been extensive discussions on this problem. On other Brands, there has also been the same discussions. I had the same problem with both of mine, started to venting my lids, now not so bad. There has been several reasons discussed, tank designs, poor ventilation and etc. My suggestion would be is to, chock a crack in your lids ,and maybe something has been resolved since I bought my boat.

    Re: gas fumes (fidlplr206)

My buddy had the smell in his 04 203 from day one, took it back to the dealer while under warranty, they replaced the gas tank and told him it would come back as the material in the tank breaks down, about a year ago the smell was back. My 202 has the smell just in the rear compartment. About all you can do short of aluminum tanks is keep your rear deck open, it does help. And if you don't have the problem, consider yourself lucky...

I would keep the bilge lid closed so close to hot water heater, especailly if it is a gas heater. Open up the front lockers, keep some ventilation or circulation in garage, maybe crack a window to bring fresh air in.

True, but I wonder if the alum. tank is more prone to creating/forming condensation than the plastic. Dunno.....

not 100% sure, but almost all of the older bass boats had vents on the top rail and most also had openings at the end of the seats that allowed even more ventilation. Now days, the vents are gone and that area by the seats is all glassed in.

    Re: (barbarian)

Vents are not gone...just relocated. Mine are on sidewall in cockpit area, and under front of seats near floor. At one point, the factory was adding extra under-seat vents, but no vent is much good without moving air. Even the big scoop vents on the rear of older rigs need moving air..which is why one faces forward and the other faces rearward.

i have looked everywhere and can't find any on my 210. after 1st picking it up, i noticed the fume spell in my compartments so i started looking for a vent and haven't found 1 to this day. i usually open the back compartment or rod lockers and the smell disappears.

Exactly my point. Bad enough now with the e-10 add more water to the fuel.

I neglected to look on the 210. Will check and see what they say when I go to the Classic next month. Does not make sense that there are no vents....but I believe you!

There isnt a single vent on the 183 either.

Melvin said he installed a bunch due to complaints. Even recommeded where to place them on my 183.

    Re: (bassin butch)

There were some models that where more noticable than others, If you have vents at the cup holders, add one around the area where the hyd. steering hoses come out. This will help.
