    Question about 1998 191DCX

My Stratos was totaled this week and I'm in the market for a new boat. I have to stay around the 10K price range.

I found a 1998 191 DCX locally for $10K. I haven't seen it or talked to the guy yet. This is what the ad says.

    Mercury 200 EFI
    • 3 blade stainless steel prop
    • Motorguide 56 pound thrust 12/24 foot control trolling motor
    • Dual battery charger
    • Lorance X25 fish/depth finder
    • Eagle Cuda 128 fish/depth finder
The guy claims that the boat has been garaged since new and only got wet when fishing in the rain

Seems like the trolling motor is a bit underpowered and may need a graph upgrade. The color is a beautiful white/red and has a white tandem trailer.

    Opinions?

I seem to remember a lot of good comments about the 191. Some more folks will be along to help shortly...

Re: Question about 1998 191DCX (Tom in Stl)

I ran a 1997 191 SC for 5 years. It was a great Mt. Home boat. I do agree that you will want to upgrade the TM and electronics as soon as you can. Personally, I would also like to upgrade to a 3-bank charger. The Merc 200 EFI is what I ran. The 2.5 EFI engines are among the best Merc's ever. If the rig is as nice as it sounds and the engine checks out, it should make you a good ride for a long time.

I don't want to post the link to the boat because I don't want someone here to beat me to it.

Unless you are a serious tournament angler or fish in high winds a lot, that is sufficient trolling motor thrust. I would agree that the electronics could use an upgrade. There may not be room for a 3-bank charger, but would consider one if there is. Other than that, have a pre purchase inspection of the motor performed by a certified Merc mechanic. You'll also want to get him to take you out for a test drive. Sounds like a well taken care of boat to me ...

My stratos had a 67lb MG and I wanted more. We can get some pretty good winds on the lakes I fish.

Re: Question about 1998 191DCX (Lea)

Thats about right. I'm selling same thing (mg 82#) for $10,300. X17 gps in back and eagle 320 up front. Seeing how it sold, it was priced right.

Re: Question about 1998 191DCX (BILLY)

I just bought a 98 191 DCX Elite in near mint condition. One owner, garage stored, non tourney angler, moderate use. 67lb Brute, Lowrance 332c w/gps on console, Eagle 500c on bow. Suzuki DT 200efi w/stainless prop. 3 bank charger. Original carpet looks perfect. Original custom cover. Everything works except manual livewell drain valve is stuck in shut position but it has pump out feature. Boat definitely looks low hour and runs great. Paid $9500 for it and was happy to do so.

The Brute is coming off (not a MG fan), Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb going on in spring. Also has a Osprey rod rack but I think I'm going to pull that out too. The deals are out there, you just gotta be ready to jump on it when "the one" presents itself. Took me 4 months to find a boat I was satisfied with and I'm grateful to the guy who sold me this one for taking good care of it!! What I learned is that the under $10,000 market is a tough one to crack, but it can be done.

Re: Question about 1998 191DCX (No hot foot)

He said a guy from MN came down and bought it. Did you get that boat from Wood River, IL? Sounds like the exact same boat.

    Tom,

If your gonna fish LOZ & Twain frequently like I think you do I would go with a 20 footer (201, 202 or 203) The 19'1 is a fine hull but for those 2 I thinkk you'll be happier with a 20 footer. If you wanna ride in my 202 PM me after deer season and we'll take her out. I live about 15 minutes from the Washington Ramp on the Missouri.
