    Outside tire wear on trailer??

I have outside tire wear on one side. The other side did this also. I bought new tire and had it balanced and seems fine. I then had other tire balanced and thought I was good to go. Nope, now that one is wearing on the outside 2". Tech at marina did not know why. Any thoughts on what I should do?

if they are radial tires you could have had the belts snap in the tires. especially if it is sitting for long periods of time between uses.

Re: Outside tire wear on trailer?? (Cullbynoon)

Went through this with one trailer. Had the tires balanced, axle re-bent, and every other thing the shop could think of, short of having a new axle installed.

When all was said and done it was good money chasing bad.

The best I could do was keep the tires balanced, bearings in spec, and tires inflated to 50-54lbs. definitely slowed down the wear process.

Originally it was on a single axle 1997 TI trailer, but I am getting rear axle tire wear on this 2006 SC Trailer.

Radial belts do shift/snap. This is a Myth. Older bias ply tires had these issues. I am a past certified BFGoodrich rep, that is where I pull my knowledge from.

It does sound like a axle problem. Are you buying trailer specific tires? Or just standard rated radials?

I get Hijacked on the water also, so no big deal! Waiting to hear from EZ Loader and see what they tell me. Talked to everyone I know and most are puzzled. Goodyear has very limited production of Marathons, one dealer said they are very hard to get because the demand is small. He also stated that tires in general are harder to get because manufactures are not producing huge inventories of tires anymore. I could get non raised letter tires for almost half the price and use my one good Goodyear for a spare. I have a single axle with shocks and brakes. Leaning towards going this way for now. Don't want to chew up another $125 tire.

Re: Outside tire wear on trailer?? (Cullbynoon)

Just got 5 new Marathon's for my trailer a couple weeks ago. No availability problems for me. I am in the city however. They were only $115.00 also.

Do your shocks check out OK. Could be an issue with one of them. Wear on one side of a tire is usually caused by camber. However that is on vehicles and can be adjusted. Never seen a trailer with camber/caster adjustments. That would be weird. Good Luck.

Re: Outside tire wear on trailer?? (Steve 187)

I've pulled tandem trailers (boats, campers, goosenecks) more than 250K miles. If the tires are wearing on the outside of the rear axles its pretty normal. They "scrub" when you make sharp turns and especially when you turn 180 degrees like getting ready to back down the ramp. I will also bet the the rear passenger side tire is worse than the drivers side tire as we tend to turn to the left more often than to the right. Turning left you have great vision, turning right is more of a blind side turn (fancy trucker talk).

Of course I've been known to be completely wrong, particulary around my wife..... And once when I tried to sell my boat on here without posting an add...sorry Lea I just couldn't resist....

    Peace,
