    Hole shot plate?

Anyone put one on a Champ? When I have the live-well full and a 1/2 tank or better of gas the boat is a little slow to plain.

Wondering if a plate from C&O would help?

Dustin posted the same about the 183 CX 150 rigged, so its not just me.

Re: Hole shot plate? (bassin butch)

I have. Can't see that it helped hole shot. Does seem to help some with back wash when coming off plane.
The only things that would seem to help: more hp, a hyd JP or lowering the motor (sucks top end), lower prop pitch( sucks top end), moving items forward (sucks top end), ditching your partner when he runs up the bank, ditching excess gear(who among us can part with our junk we can't remember storing), filling less fuel, filling the livewell only when you need it, or buying a boat with more hp capacity.

My Bob's hydraulic has the holeshot plate. Since the rig came with it, I have no comparison. It planes well, but might do as well without. As Larry said, it definitely seems to keep backwash to a minimum.... as compared to my 187 which did not have a plate...

    Re: Hole shot plate? (Lea)

I am going to add a power pole so it will likely get worst.

But I am also getting my Prop (23 Tempest plus) blueprinted / balanced, and some cup added. Maybe the prop work might help? If not I will try a hole shot plate and if all fails I will just live with it.

Balancing and thinning the blades may help, adding more cup may not, depends on how much you were spinning it before work.

What R's are you spinning up on take off Butch. Maybe as easy as playing with the PVS plugs.

You might try removing one or 2 entirely. Depends on what RPMs you find you are spinning now...

Re: Hole shot plate? (bassin butch)

    Hey Butch,

Friend of mine put an Allison skid planner on his Astro this past summer. He had hole shot problems with his boat as well. He couldn't belive the difference it made. It was quite a project putting it on, but it worked. I have no clue if it would work on a Champion or not. Just something to think about. Take a look at the following thread from the procraft/astro forum:
    http://www.bbcboards.net...t-300

He posted some nice pictures of the Allison skid planner on his Astro. The ironic thing about it, he traded his Astro for an Allison a couple of months ago. All that only to end up buying an Allison.

Forgot to add - he already had a hydrolic jackplate as well. Don't know if you can attach the skid planner without one ??

    Re: Hole shot plate? (dlewis10)

Thanks for all the replies! I am going with the following:

Get the prop B&B try it out

If not remove two PVS plugs

If not buy a hole shot plate

Try a Fury prop, they are amazing out of the hole compared to the Temptist.

Re: Hole shot plate? (bassin butch)

Almost every Champion I have ever had the pleasure to ride in jumped out of the hole. I am not familiar with all the different models of Champs, but try what you suggested to do first. PVS plugs will have an affect on hole shot. Experiment. There are many variations of hole shot plates from fixed to floating or hinged to the bottom of the JP and lengths. If it is still not improved I can tell ya that my old Astro was a dog out of the hole til I put the Allison Skid Planer on. Tempests are not exactly the fastest out of the hole either, but with the planer on it jumped out! JMHO, Craig

Craig; I jump on plane in seconds. The only time I need help is: when the live-well is filled with 40 gals of water with fish + 1/2 or better in the gas tank.
Its off to PVS land and a B&B on the prop.

Hey Butch I took out all the plugs one time to see what it would do and it spun out. So i just put in two large plugs and have one open. I will try two open sometime though to check it out.

    Re: Hole shot plate? (AllyFishing)

My Astro was the same way. By myself and all my gear it jumped out...but put water in the livewell and a fishing buddy and forget it. My Astro had twin 22 gallon fuel tanks and i always kept them pretty much full. I ran a high 5 prop for years in 24 pitch and that helped. Lots of blade surface but small diameter which allowed it to spin up the rpm's to get moving

I know a few people who have the hole shot plates and liked them. Some of them even put a beech ball inside they say it helps keep the bow lower.

    Re: Hole shot plate? (ChampRunner204)

You might the Stingray or SportSE planing aids. Everybody bashes them, but I've used them and they let me plane below 20 mph, and my boat popped on plane with 4 or 5 people in it and full of gas. When you are up and running, they are completely out of the water. It had absolutely no affect on the top end of my last boat.
