timing on a 1992 200gt

Is there any way to check both idle and WOT timing without a test prop or trying to do it standing on the back of the boat doing 55mph The only johnson mechanic choice around here is a small shop that i have seen him timing a motor on a hose and have never seen any test wheels out there. The motor is a 92 200gt model stlens. Thanks for any info.

I have heard of guys timing motors without a test wheel but I wont do it that way, seen to many get the timing wrong.

Like the man said, the only sure fire way to time one is at approx 5,500 rpm, since some of those motors have a tendency to gain a couple of degrees at high rpm, any other method may not get it just right.

What you are seeing is probably the standard backyard, on the hose method. They remove the screw holding the throttle cam roller. Disconnect the throttle cable and this lets you fully advance the timing without opening the carbs. The motor will only turn about 1,800 rpm. I would only set it at 16 degrees if using this method.

As for idle timing, idle speed (rpm) is going to dictate that if everything else is adjusted properly.

I just hate to pay someone to time it if he might not be doing it correctly and doing something that i could do in my yard. Do you know of anywhere to pick up a test wheel for this motor and what the cost would be? Thanks again,
