    Installed a new VRO pump

I installed a new VRO pump last fall on my 1996 Evinrude 150 intruder. The part # on the new pump was 5004558 and everything is good.... but. I notice that the motor is using more oil over all and smokes more at idle than it use to and it stalls at idle frequently now. It acts like it is leaner so you have to ease into the throttle and it seems to help if you hit the enrichment button or choke as some call it. I was told this is a new design pump and that it would use more oil. So I get to thinking that maybe I need to adjust the carbs for the different mixture and that is why it stalls. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks for your time, Real McCoy

That new pump will supply a little more oil, on the stalling problem, see if the roller at the top of the throttle linkage is touching the arm in front of it.

You may need to have the carbs cleaned or adjusted.

Re: Installed a new VRO pump (RUSTY63)

I had all 6 carbs apart and surfaced the bowls cause they were all warped and leaking. You told me how to do that and it ran fine but the VRO pump had gas dripping too. You told me to replace it and I did. Ran good but started to stall after I did the pump. I'll check the roller and get back to you. Thanks for the help. Real McCoy

Rusty, The roller is a few thousands away from the cam. I can turn the roller but if I pull on the linkage just slightly it contacts the cam. Is that OK? Thanks again, Real McCoy

The roller sounds good, You might try backing the low speed needles (screws) out 1/4 turn....Counterclockwise.

Your old pump and your new one deliver the same fuel:oil ratios, they have since 1992. If you are getting more smoke and oil consumption, then you may have either a restriction in the fuel system or more likely an air leak allowing bubbles in the gas.

Refer to http://continuouswave.com/whal....html for the best info on the VRO pump, how it works, and how to update one.

About the stalling, listen to Rusty.

Seahorse, Great article, I had read one similiar last year which is why I still have a VRO pump......LOL. Anyway I don't see any problems or leaks and the plugs look OK too. I may be jumping the gun on the oil consuption because I am using alot more fuel with the weather being decent and riding more. Thanks for your input and a good article as well. Real McCoy

Hook up a piece of clear fuel line to the intake of the "VRO" pump and run the boat while looking for bubbles. That is the only way to tell for sure.

The old cross flows had a semi-usless sight gauge on the inbound oil side under the cowl to verify oil delivery, these have since gone away. Some more oil is a good thing, not enough oil is a bad thing. CM

i too replaced my VRO a year or so again , and yes it def smokes more , but i use the penzoil 100% synthetic oil and run carbonguard every tank and decarb once a year . 9 year old motor is still posting 128 psi comp numbers and hangs with most 175"s

Is it because you followed the directions and are premixing & pumping oil?

Re: Installed a new VRO pump (Won Hunglo)

Mine only smokes more at idle as far as I can tell. I still think it is fine except for needing to set the carbs a little richer. I use the Rude oil Rusty told me to run last year. I was running the Pennzoil but nobody could tell me if it had the best additives to reduce carbon build up. I decarbed it last fall and did it twice cause nothing came out the first time. Nothing came out the second time either. Won I have no idea what you are asking. Just call me DUH I guess. Thanks for the thoughts, Real McCoy

What he was asking is, when you replaced the VRO/OMS did you purge the system and pre-mix the fuel? This is required to make sure you don't pop it. CM

I followed the OMC instructions which came with the pump but don't remember what they said. That was last fall and I can't remember what I just ate for breakfast.......LOL. Real McCoy
