    Re: Boysen reeds (dsly1)

I have Boysen reeds in my 94 3.0 liter vindicator . I have about 50-75 hours on it and have not had a problem yet. The carbs are adjusted fat by the guy who built it for me. and He said he had to rejet it since i wanted the boysen reeds. It has a awesome hole shot and alot of low end torque now compared to before I had the boysen reeds done.

    Re: Boysen reeds (champ,204dcx)

Glad you have good luck with the reeds you choose to run in your motor.

As the Doc posted......if your motor ever spits, it will most likely damage a reed and the whole set will have to be ordered, this can get expensive.

The research we did back in the 1980's showed that a 1 mile an hour gain on top end was all that could be expected by running the dual stage fiber reeds and the low speed and mid range did not improve enough to off set the reliability of the stock reeds.

The adjustments needed to the carbs, and the ignition system, to keep the reeds from being damaged caused some other issues that could have been avoided.

All in all, we do not do hop up on this board and do not promote hop up, if you want more info about hop up I suggest you check out http://screamandfly.com

He did warn me that boysens did not last as long as stock reeds.
So how big of a job is it to replace reeds >

Not a big job.....just takes a lot of time and some gasket scraping, a bit of locktite, a few gaskets and some stock reeds.

    Re: Boysen reeds (RUSTY63)

I wouldn't replace the boyesens with stock. You would know if they needed to be replaced.

Plus if one breaks, it won't trash things like the steel ones will. I ran a set in my 70, and it liked them, helped out in general punchy-ness, and holeshot. I liked the way it ran.

You Know, it 26 years of working on Rudes, I have never had a stock reed break, and I have turned some RPM's with a few motors.

    Re: Boysen reeds (champ,204dcx)

Most times the motor will not idle or run very well and there will be a bunch more fuel and oil in the airbox, lower pans, down the midsection, dripping on the floor in the garage.

As I posted, I have never seen a broken stock reed, I did not say it has never happened but, I have never seen one.

Unfortunately no, you have to remove the intakes to get to the reeds.

    Re: Boysen reeds (RUSTY63)

Maybe mine needs reeds then, it leaks fuel.

I have also gotten Boysen to replace one of the pieces for the reeds for my 70, I told them I cracked one, which I did, and they sent me a replacement, no charge.

I saw where someone posted the other day about breaking a steel reed, can't remember where though.

My friends told me that about a nissan rod bolt. I bought ARP's, and they said, I have never seen a stock one break, and I said, well, I don't want to show you the first one. HAHA

    It happened.

getting the back in order after a 2yr rest and it sneezed on #1 and reed is junk.

I will be changing them back to stock now. Anyone needs the other sets ?

While doing this I found 3 other problems some may be related. ALL hose issues.

    Questions:
On the bottom for the top intake (for 4 cylinders) there is a nipple for a hose. Where does this go to or come from?
On the bottom of the intake for the last 2 cylinders there I anther nipple ..... same question??????

There is a nipple on the airbox.......

Lastly and of greatest concern: A nipple immediately under the intakes looks like around base of the crank with a hose coming from it but laying loose and not connected to anything.

I also need new intake gaskets. Please send me a link or e-mail of where to purchase.

    Thanks all.

    Chris,
If I begin to use the boat at least 2 times a year again now that my boys are 11 and 9 I will upgrade the entire motor. Meanwhile stock reed ......

Do you sell the intake gasket?

Any help on the below ?

If the nipple is in the middle of the intake there is a cap that goes over the nipple. THIS MUST BE CAPPED. The nipple is not connected to any hose. Use Evinrude for your parts lookup and your shop manual for your hose routing. There are plenty of online parts stores that sell the parts. The air box has a nipple on the bottom for one hose and there is another hole on the top of the airbox for the other hose.
