Hmmm not sure about a small block. I would guess low to mid 60's runnin' real light. I would put it on a 10" plate and start at 3.5 inches below the pad. Sorry not much help for you.

Not exactly what you are asking about, but I had a 196 with a 3 liter 200 mercury. Top speed was 70 with a light load, mid 60's loaded. Speed with a small block should be close to that. What I would be worried about would be the holeshot. Even with my big block, my boat was slow to get on plane with two people and a livewell full of water.

Is this model load sensitive in the front ? I may have too much tackle in my front box. It used to run faster than low 60's and my motor seems to be just as strong. I need to upgrade to a big block.

Try to put more weight in the rear and see what happens. I know the 198 is load sensitive, and I seem to remember hearing the 196 is also...

If the 198 is , I'm sure the 196 is. I will empty my front box and see how it runs. If that dont do it, then I will get a big block & have HydroTec tweak it !!!!!!!!

It's probably going to be more load sensitive with a small block vs a big block. My boat isn't that load sensitive. I can fill up my front box and only run maybe 1 mph slower which is not enough to worry about to me.

Don't get me wrong...I have plenty of stuff in the forward lockers. I just try to keep the heaviest stuff back ....

Just ran a 24 tempest, 64 gps, 5800 rpm's, with over half tank of gas. My 26 tempest that Mark reworked to a 25 is too much , may need a 23 tempest.

I'll tell you what that hull was meant to run and that was a 3.0 L and above IMHO the 196 is too bow heavy and forward for a small block to lift it comfortably.

Thats what I am thinking too ! I have been looking for a 3 liter yamaha to put on it. If I knew when I bought this one that Yamaha made a small and big block 200, I would have gone with the big one !
