    small champs?

anybody else out there have a small champion? i have a 161 i just got , fun little boat, cant find any info out there about it, id like to talk to some others and see what all they have done to theres. id like to add a 24 volt trolling motor , but not one inch to spare in back for extra battery, seemed like a lot of wasted space in this little rig.. not wanting to do alot just really need a 24 volt system, this 12 volt runs down to fast...

Nice little boat! I used to have one that was similar. It was an 82 and it was 16'8".I don't think mine had 6 gauge wire for the trolling motor. I ran new 6 gauge wire. I had a 12/24 trolling motor. I wired the plug so that when it was on 12 it would put 12volts to the trolling motor and took it from both batteries instead of draining one battery down lower than the other. I don't remember how I did it but it is possible and it was nice to have 12 volt operation that could last for hours on two batteries and still be able to switch to 24 if I needed to.

    GETFISHED !!!

I have a 99' mean 16. I have the same problem, but mine has 12/24 volt wiring. just need to switch to a 24 volt battery, or put an extra 12volt in and run a ground wire between the two, which will take power from both

    Re: small champs? (jr.basskiller)

i was able to get an extra battery n by moving the cranking behind the gas tank, and turning the 2 trolling sideways, tight as hell but they fit, thing is now with me by myself at 225 drive the rig it wants to sit to the drivers side real bad, gotta try and move some weight around, but with so much lack of storage its gonna be hard to do..
since buying this lil champ ive repowered it with a new optimax 115, 6 inch jack plate,797 si sonar on console, 787 humminbird on ther front deck,21 pitch 4 blade trophy,80 lb. terrova auto pilot trolling motor, 3 optima batteries, and a dual bank charger. dang couldve almost bought a new rig, but like ive said this is a fun little boat, i got my stratos for when it gets bad or fishing a tourny with a partner, but its not near as much fun, and that lil sucker will fly and turn on a dime...and it sits so low in the water it makes a great dock shooting boat for crappie fishing..

I had a 168V, wound up trading it to Pat Goff when I got my 184.

Fun little boat to drive. You could poke that thing into the smallest places you could get into. Really shallow draft. I probably would've decked the front if I'd have kept it.

I have a 1999 Champ 171. I've had it almost 2 years. It has been a great boat.

I have had a 1985 168 Super Champ, a 1988 176 Super Champ, a 1995 181 Super Champ, and a 2000 Mean 16. I had 12/24 trolling motors in all of them, along with Dual Pro chargers. I never had a room problem with any of them, but they were all dealer rigged. I really liked those small Champs. I was going to buy a 2007 183CX from C&O and wound up buying a Triton instead. I wish I would have gone with another Champion. I still think they are one of the best boats made today.

Do you have a Champion dealer with a good rigger in your area. If so, I would take it to them and let them do their magic. A good rigger is worth his weight in gold. I bought most of my Champions from Southwest Marine in Chicago. His guy was first rate all the way.
