Follow up on trying new prop

Hears what you guy told me before:

    I was turning 5800 rpm 48-49 gps
with 25 psi water with a High Five prop on a 150 Mariner mag2.
It had me and another Heavy partner and a heavy load all up front because no storage on the back deck.
I found out after taking the High Five of its a 24 pitch.
I was told on here to get a Yamaha 23 or a tempest, it flies out of the hole but I would like a little more top end, and would a jack plate help?

Got the jack plate tried the Yamaha 23,was turning around 6800rpm with 25psi water, went to a 24 Tempest was turning 6500 rpm with 18psi water
But had a very quick hole shot on both the 23 pitch Yamaha got me to 58 mph gps
so did the 24 tempest but that was just a quick run as rpm's got to high in my opinion. Do I need to go on up to a 25 pitch?

    Thanks for the help

    Carl

6800 rpm is that a typo or did you say that your motor had some work done on it?

no it was between 6500 and 6800 rpms I don't think the motor has a rev limiter

I don't believe it's meant to go that high!

What kind or gear ratio are you running? 6500 rpm on a 24 tempest would be closer to 70 with the ratio of most lower units.

    Time out***************
I didn't read quite close enough.

You're running a Mag II/XR4 with the little lower unit? That's a messed up deal, there's NO WAY you're turning a 23 yamaha 6800 rpms Your tach is off, get that right and I believe your issues will be cured.

I agree with Pat on the tach issue. I would get that resolved before I did anything else. If the tach is correct your fixing to get a good look at the internals of a outboard motor as they fly out of the block.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Follow up on trying new prop (GaPro)

    *Even if*
It has 2:00 1 gear set in it, that number is just not feasable with a mag II powerhead. Unless, you're blowing a 40 foot roostertail.

Something is just whacked, and talking about it on a computer screen is probably the last thing that should be done.

Re: Follow up on trying new prop (GaPro)

I am the 4 or 5 owner of the boat and I don't have much history of it the last 2 owners were in my club and they did not have any motor work done on it.

I'll have my Mech ck the tach this but it is a new tach he installed about last march.

    thanks for the replies
