    mounting a transducer on transom?

    I just purchased a 1998 203:

My question is, do I need to remove the fuel take before mounting a transducer to the transom? I have a Humminbird SI unit and have used a separate thread to find the location but have not seen anyone mention wither they removed the fuel tank or not.

    Congrats on a great purchase!!!!

Most folks mount the SI transducer on the jackplate....it only reads at slow speeds....

Good looking boat!!!! Love the "fade" striping!!!!

Any pictures or advice on how to mount it to the jack plate?? My last boat didn't have a jack plate, so my experience with them is only about a week.

Thanks, I've searched for threads, but the only thing I can find is how people are saying use the jack plate, and that they'll post pictures, but have yet to find someone that has actually posted pictures.

So, just drill a hole on the side of the jack plate and bolt the puppy on there? Can it really be that simple?

Not a Bird owner, but many folks rely on this sight for all the in's & out's... Might be worth a look to see what they think... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sideimaging/

Contact Jordan marine in Texas. They just installed a SI on my buddies 223. They mounted it on the outside of the hull and rigged it up w/ a toggle switch. Not sure all the details, but they can tell you how to do it right.

BC, contact Angler's Marine. They have Champion dealerships in San Diego (actually in Santee) and Anaheim. Rick and Cindy Grover. They can help you.

Re: mounting a transducer on transom? (Lea)

for me Ive found that my side image works better with the transducer mounted on the boat below the jackplate, instead of on the jackplate. I was getting a lot of interference and not a very clear image for the side imaging (the regular screen with depth worked good but not the SI) I dont know if it was from engine vibration or just not in the water far enough but it works tons better mounted on the boat itself, you only have to drill holes 3/4" deep at the most so you shouldnt have to worry about hitting the tank....

    Lea,

Thanks, I actually bought the boat from the Santee AM. Art and Dave have been a great help getting other things solved, however everyone I've spoken to is using Lowrance and has no experience with the SI units.

    Mike,

That is good to hear, if it was directly below the jack plate, the gas tank wouldn't even be in the way. Are you mounting it directly inline with the pad? Just above the section of the hull with the drain???

Re: mounting a transducer on transom? (BCBaits)

I put it just above the part with the drains etc, there is about 3-4" of space just below the jackplate where I mounted it. It isnt centered, I lined it up with the one side of the jackplate...I can post pics later if you want to see.
