New 225 HO ETEC jerky when lowering trim.

I have a new 225 HO ETEC on a 520 Ranger, when fishing in shallow water and the motor is trimmed up high, it is very jerky when lowering back to low trim for take off.

It feels like it almost falls for a distance and then engages again.

Any ideas what is going on?

Try bleeding your trim unit. Sounds like it may have air in it. I had the same issue recently and it cured mine.

Tighten up the stb. side tilt tube nut, about 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time until the jerkiness goes away. I think the factory spec change recently was 50# of torque and do not back off the nut like the manual says to.

Are you dropping the motor back down while under power? My 200HO does the same thing if I am on the tilt piston and under power. I usually just pop the motor into neutral and get the motor down onto the trim pistons. Works great.

Can you guide me to the starboard trim nut you are describing. I look at the right side shaft and could not find a nut. There is a serrated knob to the right of the starboard shaft near the shaft.

stb. side of the TILT TUBE, also called the pivot tube, where the steering cable goes into, if you have manual steering. It's about 1 1/4" hex on the nut. A 12" Crescent wrench just fits it.

I THINK HE'S TALKIN ABOUT TRIMIN MOTOR DOWN FROM TILT POSSITION BACK TO THE FULL TRIM POSITION.ITS NOT SMOOTH IT BOUNCES TILL IT HITS THE TRIM PUSH RODS.MINE DOES THIS ALSO( JERKY) TILL IT RESTS ON TRIM RODS.TIGHTNIN THE PIVOT TUBE WILL CURE THIS?

That's exactly what mine does, it really jerks. Hope what Seahorse suggests will cure it. I thought it might be too tight instead of needing to be tightened. Anyway, I greased the shaft and tightened the nut and it did seem to help.

Mine does the same thing if it is in tilt and I trim down with the engine above idle....if I let her idle in gear and trim down it does not do it...

I have a 2007 200 HO (E200DHLSUA 05174899) and had the same issue from day one. Dealer changed the entire power trim unit. Trim now works perfectly. Only difference is the new unit is black instead on the factory blue.

I thought they all did that when tilting down in gear. Every one I've had all the way back to the 1991 xp200 did. Is it just air in the system.

TW, when you say you greased the shaft are you talking about the two SS rods that are there, or how do I get at the shaft if you arent talking about those two?

Seahorse said to tighten the nut on the starboard side of the TILT tube, not the trim rod. The tilt tube is the tube that your motor pivots on up and down under the steering. It has two grease fittings one on each side. My motor is only about a month old and had very little grease in the tilt tube. I thought this might have contributied to the jerky motion.

Your dealer should be able to fix you up very quickly if you don't want to tighten the nut yourself.

Here is an excerpt from a recent service letter:

July 24, 2007

New Procedure for Installing Tilt Tube
Nuts on Evinrude® DI and E-TEC® 90°
V6 200 - 250 HP Models

The installation procedure for the tilt tube nuts has
been changed.<U> This change helps prevent erratic
or "jerky" trim system operation.</U>

When servicing 1999 - 2005 90° V6 200 - 250 HP Evinrude DI models or 2005 and newer
90° V6 200 - 250 HP Evinrude E-TEC models, please use this procedure.
Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for installation of the tilt tube. Torque the tilt tube
nut (P/N 335554) to 50 to 54 ft. lbs. (68 to 73 Nm). DO NOT loosen the nut as older
service manuals direct.

I just purchased a 2004 Champ with a 2004 225 HO.
most of the guys in the post are talking about having this issue when trimming down in gear. I can make this happen when trimming down in my driveway. Will your solution work for this as well?

Yes. But grease all zirc fittings as well.

Do I need to try and bleed the lines as well? Can someone post a pic of the Tilt Tube area, or a diagram would be helpful?

Look at the right hand side of the motor where the steering cables go into the motor You will see a large nut 1 1/4" So you will need a large wrench. Not too hard to miss. You can also try to bleed the system. Trim down on to a block of wood, loosen the manual release screw on the middle of the mounting bracket and raise the trim up for a count of 5 the motor should not go up. If it does then loosen the manual release another turn. Then trim down for a count of 5. Do this 5 times and tighten the manual release screw.

This is the bleeding procedure that you are explaining? Can I do this on an incline in my drive way or does it need to be a level area?
