    i have a crack problem

came across some ugly cracks in the gelcoat today.
they're actually bad enought to make me a little nervous.

i put a post up in the restoration forum with pics...

    http://www.bbcboards.net...72315

i'm trying to figure out how bad stress cracks can be before one needs to start sweating. wondering if i need to do some sanding and sealing.

Re: i have a crack problem (fishinjim)

That looks more like an impact than a stress crack.

    Definitely!

Jim, do you have a local glass person who can give you an idea of how deep the damage is?

that was my initial thought as well.
it is in a public storage spot, wouldn't surprise me if someone backed a truck into it.
    i know i didn't hit anything.

that there were cracks there before led me to thinking they had just spread when i wasn't looking.
there are two spots that look like they could have been hit with a hammer. would the cracks spread out that much from those points of impact?

    the other pics...

the cracks run from a few inches before the "P" to just before the "W." they also run lengthwise along the hull about 4" down into the silver paint.

    and some close ups...

Something impacted that enough to stress the gel and crack it.

    Ouch!

Your insurance should take care of this for you. C&O does beautiful glass repair, if you don't have someone locally. We are fortunate to have a local fellow in VA Beach who does excellent work, too..

I do not know of any "patch kit", unless someone in the Restoration forum has ideas... Personally, from the look of your photos, I would get a professional to fix. You have polyflake to deal with as well as gelcoat...

i'll have to check on my insurance coverage. pretty sure i'm just insured for 300,000 liability to cover my rear for tournaments.
i'll have to check around about local glass repair.

i can get over and deal with the looks of the damage, i just don't want to worry about the water getting in and soaking the fiberglass.

    thanks guys!

Definitely an impact crack. When I hit a dock with my 184, it looked like that. I was quoted $1700 to fix it, insurance covered 75% of it.

i am with the others on the impact thing. but i dont think you'll get water were they are but you may have glass damage as well. if so it will get worse if not repaired.

    Re: (Lea)

Jim with all due respect when you have a spider web crack that is almost always a sign of internal damage. Trying to solve it by fixin the crack is like putting a bandage on it. It will just get worse. You really should let a glass shop look at it.

    From a pro............

Get it fixed....that's a serious lick and the cracks will keep spreading.....no amount of wet sanding will have any impact on what's going to happen in the future. It won't be good!

Going through 3 colors and located on that lower radius, I wouldn't begin to touch it for 1700.....be sure to choose the repair shop wisely! Even the factories (not just Champion) repair jobs are bad.....we fix as many factory flubs as we do impact.

Jim, here's the link to the damage I did to my 184. It's hard to see the spidercracks on the silver...

    Re: (bassinman215)

    todd morgan and bassman,

you guys are scarin the crap outta me here. lol.

bassman, sorry about your damage there. did you ever fix?

todd, i appriciate your chiming in here. i know that you know your stuff. your not touching this for $1700 really gave me a belly ache. lol.

spoke with my insurance company. this is not something they will cover. currently, i am coverd only for tournament liability to other boats.
at the present, i simply can't afford to have this done professionally, so i will be doing as much of this on my own as possible. still not sure what all that it is i'll be doing, i just know it'll be me doing it.

basscat7 from this site may be fishing with me next weekend. he has experience in the fiberglass field and offered to take a look at it. hopefully, he'll be able to figure out to what point the structure of the hull has been compromised, and i will go from there.

i briefly visited the damage again. todays wetsanding didn't hide the cracks, but the area is now smooth once again.
i looked at the hull from the inside of the rod locker. there are two small specs wher i can see light coming through. each of them is about 1/8" in diameter and in the spots where it seems there was actual impact. i'm planning on layin some fiberglass mat down on the inside of the hull over that area.
i also spent a lot of time pushing on the hull in the cracky area looking for weak spots. from both the inside and out, the hull still seems very solid. had no more give in this area than i did anywhere else in the hull.
don't know what that means really, but it made me feel a little better.

    thanks for the feedback folks.
